COLUMBIA, Mo. – Harris-Stowe women's soccer improved their record to 11-1 on Tuesday evening, scoring four goals in the second half after trailing Stephens College 2-0 at halftime.
The Hornets bounced back from a heartbreaking overtime loss to conference-leading Columbia College on Saturday with a victory over Stephens College behind two goals from freshman Maria Sosa.
The Stars had the momentum early in the game, piling on four shot attempts in the first seven minutes. The home team took the lead on a goal in the 11th minute from Kaya Cocanougher. A goal from Devin Dowell in the 43rd minute extended the lead to 2-0 leading up to halftime.
A determined Harris-Stowe team came out of the break ready to play. Five minutes into the second half, Maria Sosa scored a goal to pull her team within one. Shortly after, Lillian Ruckaberle took a pass from Rachael Manley and tied the game in the 55th minute.
The Hornets rode the momentum to another goal from Maria Sosa in the 56th minute and a goal from Rachael Manely in the 61st minute.
The Stars added pressure over the next 30 minutes, looking for a comeback of their own, but the Hornets defense kept the score where it was at to earn the 4-2 road win.
Sosa and Manley led the offensive charge on Tuesday evening. Sosa collected two more goals to put her at seven in her rookie campaign. Manely added to her team-leading 10th goal of the season and picked up her fourth assist, while Ruckaberle posted her first points of the season with a goal in the 55th minute.
Next up for the Hornets is another American Midwest Conference matchup in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, against Williams Baptist University this Saturday, October 16th. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
