Hornets Swept by Stephens College

COLUMBIA, Mo. – This afternoon the Harris-Stowe State University softball team was back in action when they traveled to Columbia, Missouri, to take on the Stephens (Mo.) College Stars in an AMC doubleheader. The Hornets were swept in the doubleheader as they lost the first game by a final score of 34-1 and the second game by a final score of 31-1 to fall to 0-3 on the season and 0-3 in the American Midwest Conference. With the sweep, the Stars improve to 7-5 on the year and 4-0 in the AMC.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Hornets put together five hits in the loss. The Stars got on the board quickly as they scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first, four runs in the bottom of the second, and seven runs in the bottom of the third to jump out to an early lead. The Hornets brought a run across in the top of the fourth, but 12 runs from the Stars in the bottom half of the inning solidified the win for Stephens College.

Brandi Bradford was the starter in this one as she allowed 28 hits while striking out one in 4.0 innings of work. Kyrah Greer led the way at the plate as she went 3-for-3 in the game. In addition, Zaria Palmer went 1-for-3, Caitlyn Chandler went 1-for-2 with a run scored, and Ciara Clark-Payton had an RBI to round out the top performers for the Hornets.

Harris-Stowe continued to struggle in the second game as they were held to two hits in the contest. Stephens College scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first and six runs in the bottom of the second to jump out to an early 19-0 lead. The Hornets responded with a run in the top of the third, but 12 runs from the Stars over the next two innings solidified the sweep.

Brandi Bradford got the start in this one as she allowed seven hits in 0.1 innings in the circle. Zaria Palmer came in to relieve Bradford as she allowed 18 hits while striking out two in the final 3.2 innings of the game. Palmer also led the way at the plate as she went 1-for-2 with an RBI. In addition, Ciara Clark-Payton went 1-for-1 and Shania O'Neal scored a run to round out the top performers for the Hornets.

The Hornets will return to the field on Friday, April 2nd when they play host to the Missouri Baptist University Spartans in an AMC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 2 p.m. with the second game to follow. Limited spectators will be allowed to attend the games but only if they are on the softball teams will call list. No visiting team spectators will be allowed to attend.
