Box Score FULTON, Mo. – The Hornets extended their winning streak to eight on Saturday afternoon in a 1-0 shutout victory over the William Woods Owls on the road.
Harris-Stowe was led to victory behind strong defensive play, a stellar performance in goal by Lisa Pietz, and a clutch second-half goal from
Mary Grace Angeli. With the win, the Hornets sit at 8-0 to begin the year and 2-0 in the American Midwest Conference.
Annesta Richards applied pressure for Harris-Stowe early in the first half with a shot on goal. A few minutes later,
Yasmina Dressen and
Leslie Ballard followed up with a header on goal and a shot that missed just wide. In total, the Hornets outshot the Owls 5-4 in the first half with no goals allowed from either goalie.
William Woods kicked off the second half with a quick shot on goal just two and a half minutes in, but Pietz was up to the task. A yellow card one minute later set up a Lexi Drbul shot attempt, stopped once again by the freshman goaltender.
The Owls put up three more shots on goal over the next 20 minutes, keeping the Hornet offense at bay with just one shot in that time frame. Pietz, with five saves in the second half, bought just enough time for the recently subbed in
Mary Grace Angeli to put one past Owl goaltender Michyla Handley.
With all of the momentum, the Hornets defense stepped up in a huge way, allowing just two more shots the remainder of the time to give Pietz the shutout and the team their eighth straight win.
The unbeaten Hornets sit atop of the AMC to start the year and will put their winning streak on the line on Monday, September 27, in a non-conference matchup against Talladega College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Hornet Field.
