ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University softball fell 12-6 in game one and 11-7 in game two of the doubleheader to Rust College at Stars Park on Wednesday afternoon. With the losses, the Lady Hornets fall to 1-27 on the season while the Bearcats improve to 7-28.
In game one, the Bearcats scored five runs in the first. Freshman catcher
Brianna Huff (Columbus, Ohio/Private Tree of Life Christian College Prep) singled to left to start the bottom of the first. Senior outfielder
Morgan Nettles (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) doubled to right to advance Huff to third. Freshman catcher
Jaden Crenshaw (Killeen, Texas/Robert M. Shoemaker) walked to load the bases. Sophomore infielder
Gracie Schmitte (San Diego, Calif./Mar Vista) walked to score Huff. Senior infielder
Christal Smith (Jacksonville, Fla./Terry Parker) singled to score Nettles to cut the Bearcats lead to 5-2.
The Bearcats scored two runs in the second and three in the third. Crenshaw walked to start the bottom of the third. Schmitte walked. Freshman infielder
Nichelle Davis (St. Louis, Mo./Jennings) was hit by pitch to load the bases. Freshman infielder
Jadia Phillips (Maryland Heights, Mo./Pattonville) walked to score Crenshaw to cut the Bearcats lead to 10-3. The Bearcats scored two in the fifth.
Phillips reached on an error to move Smith to third. Junior outfielder
Juanesha Washington (St. Louis, Mo./Carnahan) single to score Smith to cut the Bearcats lead to 12-4. Huff singled to right center to to score Phillips to cut it to 12-5 Bearcats. Huff led the way with four hits while Nettles, Smith and Washington all added one hit. Huff, Schmitte, Smith, Phillips and Washington all recorded a run batted in.
In game two, the Bearcats scored three in the top of the first. Huff walked to start the bottom of the first and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Nettles doubled to right to score Huff. Freshman infielder
Michaela Thomas (Fort Pierce, Fla./Fort Pierce Westwood Academy) walked. Crenshaw would walk to load the bases. Schmitte singled to right to score Nettles and Thomas to tie the game at three.
The Bearcats scored three in the second to take a 6-3 lead. Schmitte walked with one out in the third. Smith singled to center to move Schmitte to third. Phillips doubled to left field to score Schmitte and Smith to cut the Bearcats lead to 6-5. The Bearcats scored one in the fifth to push their lead to 7-5. Schmitte walked with one out. Davis walked. Phillips singled to right center to score Schmitte and Davis to tie the game at seven. The Bearcats scored one in the sixth and three in seventh.
Phillps led the way with two hits while Nettles, Schmitte, and Smith all recorded a hit. Phillips recorded four RBI's while Schmitte added two RBI's and Nettles had one RBI.
The Lady Hornets return to action on Saturday, April 12th at 1 and 3 pm against William Woods at Stars Park.
