The second member we would like to spotlight is Dr. Henry Givens, Jr.
Dr. Givens, Jr. served as the president of Harris-Stowe State University from 1979-2011. Under Givens, Jr. the university expanded its degree programs and grew the university from one building to eight and opened the first business school satellite campus in south St. Louis.
Under Givens, Jr. the Emerson Performance Center opened in 2003. Athletics was able to hire full-time personnel that included: the Athletics Director, Sports Information Director, Athletics Trainer and Administrative Assistant. The men's soccer went to the NAIA Tournament three times including a final four appearance in 2000. Women's soccer was introduced to the university in 1995. At least 30 percent of participants had a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher each year. Four athletes were the valedictorians of their graduating classes. Nine athletes were NAIA All-Americans.
Eighteen former athletes have been recognized by HSSU at distinguished alumni.
