OSKALOOSA, Iowa – This afternoon the Harris-Stowe State University men's basketball team was back in action when they continued play in the William Penn University Classic against the fourth ranked William Penn University Statesmen. The Hornets were defeated by the Statesmen by a final score of 114-92 to fall to 0-2 on the season. With the win, William Penn improves to 2-0 on the season.
In the first half of the game, both sides came out and exchanged baskets early. Neither side was able to gain an advantage as the half progressed and the game was tied at 33 with eight minutes to play in the period. The Statesmen picked it up down the final stretch of the period and were able to take a six point lead with five minutes left in the half. The Hornets battled back and cut the score to three but that was as close as they would get as the Statesmen took a 54-46 lead into the break.
The Statesmen came out in the second half and continued to play well as they pushed their lead out to 14 with 15 minutes to play in the game. The Hornets were able to respond and cut the lead to single digits, but William Penn responded back and extended their lead back to 13 midway through the half. Harris-Stowe did their best to get back into the game, but William Penn closed them out down the stretch to hand the Hornets their second straight loss.
The Hornets had a tough time scoring the ball in this one as they went 34-for-81 (41.98%) from the field and 7-for-26 (26.92%) from behind the arc. The Hornets were outrebounded 60-42 and dished out just eight assists in the contest.
Deshawn Munson (SR/East St. Louis, Ill.) was back at it again tonight as he finished with a career and game high 51 points, a game high 13 rebounds, and a game high five assists. In addition, Jamarr Joseph (SR/Spring Valley, N.Y.) and Elmelik Martin Jr. (SR/Detroit, Mich.) both had 13 points to round out the top performers for the Hornets.
The Hornets will return to the court on Saturday, November 21st when they travel to Baldwin City, Kansas, to take on the Baker (Kan.) University Wildcats in a nonconference matchup. The game is set to tip-off at 2 p.m. No fans will be allowed at the game but live stats and video will be provided.
