HORNETS FALL IN SEASON OPENER 3-2

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Harris-Stowe State University women's soccer team kicked off their season this afternoon when they played host to the William Penn (Iowa) University Statesmen in a nonconference matchup. The Hornets were defeated by the Statesmen by a final score of 3-2 to fall to 0-1 on the season. With the win today, William Penn improves their record to 1-1.

The Hornets got off to a good start in the first few minutes of the game as they controlled the possession on their offensive half of the field. The Statesmen picked it up as the half progressed and were able to get on the board with 20 minutes to play in the period to take a 1-0 lead. The Hornets did their best to equalize before the break but ultimately the Statesmen would take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Harris-Stowe came out in the second half and started to apply more pressure to the Statesmen backline. They were able to get on the board just two minutes into the frame when Leslie Ballard (FR/Valley Park, Mo.) finished off a pass from Justice Corn (SR/St. Louis, Mo.) to tie the score at one. The pair were back at it again just nine minutes later when Corn finished off a pass from Ballard to give Harris-Stowe a 2-1 advantage. However, the Hornets lead did not last long as the Statesmen tied the score at two just two minutes later and then found the back of the net with just under three minutes to play in the game to solidify the win.

Harris-Stowe was outshot 23-5 in the game and did not record a corner kick compared to seven from the Statesmen.

Camila Chaves (SR/Medellin, Colombia) was in goal for the Hornets as she recorded eight saves in the contest.

The women's soccer team will return to the field on Saturday, September 19th when they open up conference play against Stephens (Mo.) College. The game is set to start at noon on Hornets Field. Spectators will not be allowed at the game but the game will be streamed live.
