POPOCA SCORES TWO IN WIN

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Harris-Stowe women's soccer team was back on the pitch when they played host to the Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University Trojans in their first AMC match of the season. The Hornets were able to defeat the Trojans by a final score of 2-0 to improve to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in the AMC.

The Hornets came out in the first half and controlled the possession from the start. They created several scoring chances throughout most of the first half and forced the Trojans keeper to make five saves in the period. Harris-Stowe was finally able to get on the board with just three minutes to play in the half when Lizette Popoca (SR/Waukegan, Ill. ) finished off a pass from Malou Hagedorn (SO/Warstein, Germany) for her first goal of the season to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead at the break.

The Hornets continued to control the tempo in the second half, but had a tough time finishing their chances as the game remained close for a majority of the period. However, Popoca was able to finish off her second of the game with just 12 minutes to play to solidify the win for the Hornets.

Ondrea Montgomery (FR/Louisville, Ky.) (1-0) and Camila Chaves (SR/Medellin, Colombia) (1-1) split time in goal for the Hornets as the two combined to make three saves in their second combined shutout of the season.

The women's soccer team is back in action on Saturday, October 10th when they play host to the Williams Baptist (Ark.) University Eagles in an AMC matchup. The game is set to kick off at 1 p.m. No spectators will be allowed but live video and live stats will be provided.
