ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Harris-Stowe State University women's basketball team was back in action when they played host to the Saint Xavier (Ill.) University Cougars in a nonconference matchup. The Hornets were defeated by the Cougars by a final score of 87-57 to fall to 0-3 on the season. With the win, the Cougars improve to 2-0 on the year.
Harris-Stowe came out in the first quarter and had a tough time getting anything going as the Cougars jumped out to an early 15-2 lead. The Hornets battled back and were able to cut the lead to nine, but another run from the Cougars put them up 22-8 heading into the second. Saint Xavier continued to push the tempo in the second quarter and were able to grow their lead to as many as 24 midway through the period. The Hornets did their best to get back into the game before half but ultimately the Cougars would take a 48-24 lead into the locker room.
The Hornets came out of the break and started to cut into the Cougars lead as they found themselves trailing by 19 heading into the final quarter. The Cougars struggled to take care of the ball in the final frame but the damage was done as they cruised to a 30-point win.
The Hornets struggled to score the ball tonight as they went 21-for-75 (28%) from the floor and 2-for-16 (12.5%) from behind the arc. They turned the ball over 21 times and were outrebounded 58-40.
Harris-Stowe was led by Maia Marshall (JR/Westchester, Ill.) who scored a team high 12 points. In addition to Marshall, Surina Finnie (JR/Memphis, Tenn.) and Taia Smith (JR/Grand Rapids, Mich.) both finished with eight points, while Keuna Cummings (JR/Dallas, Texas) and Kyla Matthews (FR/Bolingbrook, Ill.) both finished with six rebounds.
The Hornets will return to the court on Friday, December 11th when they play host to the St. Ambrose (Iowa) University Fighting Bees in a nonconference matchup. No fans will be allowed at the game but live stats and video will be provided.
