Hornets Outlast Eagles in Overtime

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Harris-Stowe State University women's basketball team was back on the court tonight when they played host to the Williams Baptist (Ark.) University Eagles in an AMC matchup. The Hornets, who came into this game on a two game winning streak, were able to extend their streak to three as they defeated the Eagles by a final score of 87-83 to improve to 3-3 on the season and 3-0 in the American Midwest Conference. With the loss, the Eagles fall to 5-4 on the year and 2-2 in the AMC.
 
The Hornets came out in the first quarter of the game and jumped out to an early 7-3 lead. The Eagles battled back and were able to tie the score at nine, and then went on an 11- 8 run to end the quarter to take a 20-15 lead into the second. The Eagles quickly extended their lead to seven to start the second, but an 8-2 run from the Hornets put them down 24-23 midway through the quarter. They continued to push the tempo down the final stretch of the half and were able to take a 34-32 lead into the locker room.
 
The game remained close to start the second half as neither side was able to gain an advantage. With the score tied at 50 late in the quarter, the Hornets were able to score the final bucket of the period to take a 52-50 lead into the fourth. The Eagles bounced back to start the fourth and went on a 6-0 run to take 57-53 late in the game. The game remained close down the final stretch of the half but a two point shot late in the game from Williams Baptist tied the score at 75 to send the game to overtime.
 
The Hornets played well in the overtime period and took a lead with just over a minute to play. The Eagles tried to get back into the contest but the Hornets held them off down the stretch to pick up their third straight win.
 
The Hornets went 29-for-67 (43.28%) from the floor and 8-for-14 (57.14%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Eagles 47-33 and turned the ball over 24 times.
 
Ronne'zje Elliot led the way for the Hornets as she finished with a team high 22 points and a team high six assists. In addition to Elliot, Keanu Cummings finished with 14 points and a team high eight rebounds, Maia Marshall finished with nine points, and Kambri Davison finished with 11 points to round out the top performers for the Hornets.
 
The Hornets will return to the court on Saturday. January 16th when they travel to Columbia, Missouri, to take on the Columbia (Mo.) College Cougars in an AMC matchup. The game is set to tip-off at 1 p.m. No spectators will be allowed but live video and stats will be provided.
