ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Harris-Stowe State University women's basketball team was back in action when they played host to the University of Health Science & Pharmacy (Mo.) Eutectics in an AMC matchup. The Hornets defeated the Eutectics by a final score of 67-65 to improve to 4-6 on the season and 4-3 in the American Midwest Conference. With the loss, the Eutectics fall to to 8-6 on the year and 4-5 in the AMC.
Harris-Stowe came out in the first quarter of the game and found themselves trailing 10-5 early. They settled in as the quarter progressed and were able to tie the score at 10 before going on a 15-5 run down the final stretch of the frame to take a 25-15 lead into the second. The Hornets continued to play well in the second and were able to grow their lead to 12 midway through the quarter. The Eutectics battled back and finished the half on a 17-10 run to cut the Hornets lead to 41-36 at the break.
The Eutectics carried over their momentum from the first half into the second half and were able to tie the score at 43 midway through the third quarter. They continued to push the tempo as the quarter progressed and were able to take a 55-51 lead into the final quarter. The game went back-and-forth throughout the entire fourth quarter, but a layup from
Tarsheia Page with 12 second left in the game put the Hornets up one late. The Eutectics had a chance to win the game but a strong defensive stand from Harris-Stowe lifted them to their first win in four games.
The Hornets shot the ball well in this one as they went 23-for-52 (44.2%) from the floor and 9-for-23 (39.1%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Eutectics 30-23 and turned the ball over 19 times while racking up eight steals.
Surina Finnie led the way for the Hornets as she finished with a team high 17 points to go with seven rebounds. In addition to Finnie,
Taia Smith finished with 11 points and a game high nine rebounds,
Kya Gordon finished with a season high 10 points, and
Maia Marshall added 10 points to round out the top performers for the Hornets.
The Hornets will return to the court on Tuesday, February 2
nd when they travel down the road to Missouri Baptist University to take on the Spartans in an AMC matchup. No spectators will be allowed at the game but live stats and video will be provided. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m.
