10/3/2021 12:52:00 PM

Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Harris-Stowe men's soccer saw their seven-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon after a 2-1 loss to Lyon College.

After a tight contest throughout the entire 90 minutes, the Hornets' comeback bid fell short after a Scots goal in the 82nd minute of the game.

Ricardo Benini got the game going in a hurry, taking a shot on goal in the second minute that Lyon goaltender Bosco Pery stopped. The Scots returned the favor with a shot attempted that was saved by Joshua Precious at 6:34.

Three minutes later, Marcos Fernandez put the visitors ahead with a goal off an assist by Juan Araque.

With the ball in the offensive zone, the Hornets drew a foul to set up a free-kick which turned into a penalty kick when the Scots fouled on the shot attempt. With a chance to tie the game, Victor Diaz buried his one-on-one opportunity to knot the game at one.

Both teams battled hard throughout the period, picking up a combined five yellow cards in the first, but neither team took possession of the game heading into the second half.

The second half was more of the same. Lyon pulled ahead in the 82nd minute on a goal from Marcos Fernandez. The Hornets gave their best to tie it up, hammering on three shots in the final five minutes, but the comeback bid ultimately fell short.

The loss ended the men's winning streak at seven and gave them their first conference loss of the year. Their record now stands at 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the American Midwest Conference.

Next on the schedule is an October 6 matchup at Lincoln Christian University in Lincoln, Illinois. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
