Hornets Drop Final Game of Regular Season

BATESVILLE, Ark. – This afternoon the Harris-Stowe State University women's basketball team was back in action when they traveled to Batesville, Arkansas, to take on the 21st ranked Lyon (Ark.) College Scots in their final game of the regular season. The Hornets were defeated by the Scots by a final score of 66-39 to fall to 5-9 on the season and 5-6 in the American Midwest Conference. With the win, the Scots improve to 10-1 on the season and 10-1 in the AMC.

The Hornets came out and had a tough time getting anything going in the first few minutes of the game. The Scots took advantage and were able to start the game on an 13-0 run before taking a 15-5 lead into the second. Harris-Stowe pick it up to start the second and were able to cut the Scots lead to 18-10 in the first two minutes of the frame. The Scots quickly pushed their lead back out to 13, and then finished the half on a 12-6 run to take a 33-18 lead into the locker room.

The Lyons carried over their momentum into the second half and extended their lead to 18 midway through the third quarter. The Hornets continued to struggle scoring the basketball and found themselves trailing 47-28 heading into the final frame. The Scots played well in the final quarter and never let the Hornets back into the game as they closed them out down the stretch to solidify the win.

The Hornets went just 14-for-52 (26.92%) from the floor and 4-for-21 (19.05%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded 46-27 and turned the ball over 13 times.

Maia Marshall led the way for the Hornets as she finished with a team high 10 points. In addition to Marshall, Ronne'zja Elliot finished with nine points, Taia Smith finished with a team high six rebounds, and Keanu Cummings pulled down four rebounds to round out the top performers for Harris-Stowe.

The Hornets have qualified for the 2021 AMC Women's Basketball Championships and will wait to see who they play after the conclusion of all conference games. Check hornetsathletics.com for schedule updates.
