ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Harris-Stowe State University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the William Penn (Iowa) University Statesmen in a nonconference matchup. The Hornets were defeated by the Statesmen by a final score of 14-4 to fall to 0-2 on the season. With the win, the Statesmen improve to 2-1 on the year.
The Hornets got off to a slow start in this one as the Statesmen rallied for six runs in the top of the second inning to jump out to an early 6-0 lead. The Hornets battled back and were able to score two runs in the bottom of the frame, but another six run rally from the Statesmen in the top of the fourth put them up 12-2 in the game. The Hornets once again responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth and a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Statesmen lead to 12-4 heading into the sixth. However, William Penn was able to score two more runs in the top of the sixth and close out the Hornets in the final two innings to solidify the win.
Armondo Sierra (0-1) got the start in this one as he allowed seven hits and six earned runs while striking out one in 2.0 innings on the mound.
Cam Fuller (0-0),
Brian Myers (0-0), and
Tomas Pinet Jr. pitched in relief as the three combined to allow 10 hits and eight earned runs while striking out four batters in the final 5.0 innings of the game.
Will Crooker led the way offensively for the Hornets as he went 2-for-3 with a solo homerun (1). In addition to Crooker,
Matt Janocik went 2-for-3 with a run scored,
Brendan Claus had two RBI's, and
Bay To went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to round out the top performers for the Hornets.
The Hornets will return to the field on Tuesday, March 2
nd when they travel to St. Louis Community College for a junior varsity doubleheader. Their next varsity game will be Saturday, March 6
th when they travel to Parkville, Missouri, to take on the Park (Mo.) University Pirates for the first two games of a four game series. The first game of the doubleheader is set to start at 12 p.m. No fans will be allowed to attend.
