ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Harris-Stowe State University men's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the William Woods (Mo.) University Owls in an AMC matchup. The Hornets were defeated by the Owls by a final score of 72-62 to fall to 1-8 on the season and 0-6 in the American Midwest Conference. With the win, the Owls improve to 6-7 on the year and 6-5 in the AMC.
Harris-Stowe came out in the first half of the game and found themselves leading 12-9 early. The Owls settled in as the half progressed and the score remained close with five minutes to play in the half. With the Hornets trailing 23-21, the Owls went on a 13-3 run to close out the half and take a 36-24 lead into the locker room.
The Owls came out of the break and immediately pushed their lead to 15 on their first possession of the period. The Hornets answered back and cut the lead to 11, but another run from the Owls put them up 15 with 15 minutes to play in the game. The Hornets were able to cut the lead back down to eight midway through the half, but that was as close as they would get as the Owls held them off down the stretch to hand the Hornets their sixth straight loss.
The Hornets went 23-for-53 (43.4%) from the floor and 9-for-27 (22.2%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded 41-28 and turned the ball over 13 times.
Riley Barnes led the way for the Hornets as he finished with a game high 22 points.
David Spell also had great game as he finished with 10 points and a team high 11 rebounds to record his first double-double of the season. In addition,
Jamarr Joseph and
Marquis Pepper also finished with 10 points to round out the top performers for the Hornets.
The Hornets will return to the court on Tuesday, February 9
th when they travel to Hannibal, Missouri, to take on Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University in an AMC matchup. No spectators will be allowed to attend but live video and stats will be provided. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
