ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Harris-Stowe State University women's basketball team was back in action when they played host to the William Woods (Mo.) University Owls in an AMC matchup. The Hornets were able to defeat the Owls by a final score of 52-30 to improve to 5-7 on the season and 5-4 in the American Midwest Conference. This is the lowest point total the Hornets have allowed since January 2
nd, 2018 against Hannibal-LaGrange.
The Hornets got off to a good start in this one as they jumped out to an early 9-2 lead in the contest. The played tough defense and never let William Woods get anything going throughout the quarter as they led 17-4 at the end of the first. They continued to push the tempo to start the second quarter and were able to grow their lead to 22-7 midway through the frame. The Hornets ended the half on a 7-2 run and took a 29-9 lead into the locker room.
The Hornets struggled to start the third quarter as the Owls started the half on a 7-0 run to cut the Hornets lead to 13. The Hornets picked it up as the quarter progressed and were able to grow their lead back out to 40-21 heading into the final period. The Hornets continued to play tough defense in the fourth quarter and never let the Owls back in the game as they closed them out to solidify their fifth win of the season.
The Hornets had a tough time scoring the ball in this one as they went 18-for-55 (32.7%) from the floor and 6-for-19 (31.6%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Owls 42-38 and forced the Owls to turn the ball over 26 times.
Surina Finnie and
Ronne'zje Elliot led the way for the Hornets as they both finished tied for a game high of nine points. In addition,
Keanu Cummings finished with a game high 11 rebounds and added seven points, while
Taia Smith finished with eight points to round out the top performers for the Hornets.
The Hornets will return to the court on Tuesday, February 9
th when they travel to Hannibal, Missouri, to take on the Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University Trojans in an AMC matchup. No spectators are allowed to attend but live stats and video will be provided. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m.
