Hornets Split Doubleheader Against Waldorf

FOREST CITY, Iowa – This afternoon the Harris-Stowe State University baseball team was back in action when they traveled to Forest City, Iowa, to take on the Waldorf (Iowa) University Warriors in the final two games of a four game series. The Hornets, who were swept in yesterdays doubleheader, split the doubleheader today as they won the first game by a final score of 10-2 and lost the second game by a final score of 12-8 to improve to 4-6 on the season. With the split, the Warriors improve to 4-8 on the year.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Hornets put together 12 hits in the 10-2 win. The Warriors got off to a quick start in this one as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. However, their lead did not last long as the Hornets rallied for three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-2 advantage. Harris-Stowe continued to put the ball in play as the game progressed and were able to score one run in the top of the fourth and six runs in the top of the fifth to solidify the win.

Raul Alvarez (1-0) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed one hit and two earned runs while striking out four in 4.1 innings on the mound. Cam Fuller and Preston Burnett came in to relieve Alvarez as the two combined to allow one hit while striking out three in 2.2 scoreless innings. Logan Dryden led the way at the plate as he went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. In addition to Dryden, Will Menendez went 1-for-2 with three runs scored and a solo homerun, Matt Janocik went 1-for-4 with two RBI, Davie Pound went 1-for-4 with two RBI, and Alex Williams added an RBI to round out the top performers for the Hornets.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Hornets put together four hits in the 12-8 loss. Once again Waldorf got on the board first in the second game as they scored in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Harris-Stowe answered back over the next few innings and were able to score three runs in the top of the second and one run in the top of the third to take a 4-1 advantage. The Warriors responded by scoring two runs in the bottom of the third, but another two run rally from the Hornets in the top of the fourth put them up 6-3 in the game. Their lead did not last long as the Warriors rallied for six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take 9-6 lead midway through the contest. Harris-Stowe was able to score a run in each of the next two innings, but a three run rally from Warriors in the bottom of the sixth solidified the 3-1 series win.

Dajuan Griffin got the start in this one as he allowed six hits and six earned runs in 3.1 innings on the mound. James Shaw (0-1), Tommy Benner, and Logan Dryden all came in to relieve Griffin as the three combined to allow eight hits and four earned runs while striking out one in the final 2.2 innings of the game. Brendan Claus led the way for the Hornets at the plate as he went 1-for-2 with a three run homerun. In addition to Claus, Will Menendez went 1-for-1 with two RBI and two runs scored, and Logan Dryden went 1-for-3 with an RBI to round out the top performers for the Hornets.

The Hornets baseball team will return to the field on Tuesday, March 16th when they travel to St. Charles Community College for a junior varsity doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The varsity team will be back on the field on Friday, March 19th when they travel to Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, to take on Williams Baptist (Ark.) University for the first two games of a four game conference set. The first game of the doubleheader is set to start at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow.
