COLUMBIA, Mo. – This afternoon the Harris-Stowe State University baseball team was back in action when they traveled to Columbia, Missouri, to take on the Columbia College Cougars in the final two games of a four game set. The Hornets, who were swept in the doubleheader against the Cougars yesterday, lost both games of the doubleheader this afternoon as they fell in the first game by a final score of 11-1 and the second game by a final score of 4-3 to drop to 5-13 on the season and 1-7 in the American Midwest Conference. With the sweep, the Cougars improve to 15-4 on the year and 6-2 in the AMC.
The Hornets put together three hits in the first game of the doubleheader. The Cougars got off to a quick start in this one as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first, one run in the bottom of the second, seven runs in the bottom of the fourth, and one run in the bottom of the 5
th to take an 11-0 lead. The Hornets battled back and were able to score a run in the top of the sixth, but that was as close as they would get as the Cougars closed them out to take the first game of the doubleheader.
Raul Alvarez (1-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed six hits and eight earned runs while striking out two in 3.0 innings of work.
Preston Burnett came in to relieve Alvarez as he allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out one in the final 3.0 innings of the game.
Bay To led the way at the plate as he went 1-for-3 with an RBI. In addition,
Brendan Claus went 1-for-1 with a run scored to round out the top performers for the Hornets.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Hornets put together six hits in the contest. They got on the board first in this one as they scored one run in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead in the game. They continued to put the ball in play as the game progressed and were able to score one run in the top of the fourth and one run in the top of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. The Cougars battled back and scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead late in the game. Harris-Stowe did their best to tie the game in the final few innings but the Cougars picked up the final outs to solidify the four game sweep.
Dajuan Griffin got the start in this game as he allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out three in 5.0 innings on the mound.
Alek Sierra (0-1) came in to relieve Griffin as he allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out two in the final three innings of the game.
Alex Williams led the way at the plate for the Hornets as he went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. In addition,
Logan Dryden had an RBI to round out the top performers for the Hornets.
The Hornets return to the field Sunday, March 28
th when they travel to Southwestern Illinois College for a junior varsity doubleheader at 1 p.m. The varsity team will return to the field on Friday, April 2
nd when they host the Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University Trojans for the first two games of a four game set. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Stars Park.
