Hornets Split Series With Scots

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Harris-Stowe State University baseball team was back in action when they played host to the Lyon (Ark.) College Scots in the final two games of a four game set. The Hornet, who the split the doubleheader with the Scots yesterday, split the doubleheader today as they lost the first game by a final score of 6-5 and won the second game by a final score of 3-1 to improve to 10-17 on the season and 6-10 in the American Midwest Conference. With the split, the Scots improve to 17-21 on the year and 12-12 in the AMC.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Hornets put together eight hits in the loss. They came out and got on the board first in this one as they scored two runs in the third and three runs in the fourth to jump out to an early 5-0 lead. The Scots battled back and scored one run in the top of the fifth and four runs in the top of the seventh to tie the score at five and send the game to extra innings. They continued to put the ball in play and were able to score a run in the top of the eighth and pick up the final three outs of the game to solidify the win.

Raul Alvarez was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed six hits while striking out four batters in 5.2 innings on the mound. James Shaw, Preston Burnett (0-1), and Tommy Benner came in to relieve Alvarez as the three combined to allow seven hits and three earned runs while striking out two in the final 2.1 innings of the game. Maurice La Fon led the way at the plate as he went 1-for-4 with a two run blast. In addition, Bay To went 3-for-4 with a run scored, Logan Dryden went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Davie Pound went 1-for-1 with an RBI, and Alek Sierra went 1-for-3 with an RBI to round out the top performers for the Hornets.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Hornets put together four hits in the contest. They got on the board first in this one as they scored a run in the bottom of the third to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. The Scots bounced back and tied the score at one in the top of the fourth, but two runs from the Hornets in the bottom of the fifth solidified the win for Harris-Stowe.

Alex Williams (3-3) was the starter in this one as he allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out six in his second complete game of the season. Bay To led the way at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Logan Dryden and Turner McDonald each picked up an RBI in the contest.

The Hornets will return to the field on Tuesday, April 27th when they play host to the William Woods (Mo.) University Owls in an AMC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at noon with the second to follow at Stars Park. Attendance will be limited to those individuals on the baseball team pass list.
