Hornets Season Ends in Hannibal

HANNIBAL, Mo. – Tonight the Harris-Stowe State University volleyball team was back in action when they traveled to Hannibal, Missouri, to take on the Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University Trojans in the first round of the AMC Women's Volleyball Championships. The Hornets were swept by the Trojans in three straight sets (19-25, 15-25, 12-25) to fall to 1-13 on the season. With the win, the Trojans will advance to the quarterfinals of the AMC Women's Volleyball Championship where they will take on William Woods (Mo.) University.
 
In the first set of the match, both sides came out and exchanged points early. The game remained close throughout the majority of the set, but with the score tied at 17 the Trojans went on an 8-2 run to close out the game and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
The Trojans carried over their momentum into the second set and were able to jump out to an early 8-3 lead. The Hornets battled back and cut the lead to three, but an 9-2 run from the Trojans gave them a 21-11 advantage late in the game. They picked up the final few points of the set and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
The third set started similar to the first as both teams exchanged points early. However, with the score tied at nine, the Trojans went on an 11-0 run to take a commanding lead in the game. The Hornets did their best to get back into the contest, but the Trojans picked up the final points of the game to solidify the three set sweep.
 
The Hornets finished the match with 18 kills and a -0.036 attacking percentage. Ariel Stroud led the way offensively as she finished with a team high seven kills in the match. In addition, Valorie Walker finished with a team high 11 assists and seven digs, while Arnecka McReynolds finished with seven digs to round out the top performers for the Hornets.
 
This marks the end of the 2020-21 Harris-Stowe women's volleyball season. The team ended with a 1-13 overall record and a 0-9 mark in the American Midwest Conference. The team will return to competition in the fall.
