ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Harris-Stowe State University men's soccer team was back in action when they played host to the William Woods (Mo.) University Owls in the First Round of the AMC Men's Soccer Championships. The Hornets were defeated by the Owls by a final score of 2-0 to fall to 1-6-1 on the season. With the win, the Owls will advance to take on the Columbia (Mo.) College Cougars in the AMC Men's Soccer Championship Quarterfinals.
The Hornets came out in the first half of the game and created several scoring chances early. Their best chance to score came just a few minutes into the contest when
Dorival Almeida hit a shot off the cross bar and out of play. The Owls picked it up as the game progressed and got on the board first 25 minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead. The Owls continued to push the pace and were able to score a second goal with 12 minutes left in the half to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
The Hornets had a tough time getting anything going offensively in the second half of the game. The Owls controlled the tempo and created several scoring chances throughout the half. However, the Hornets were able to keep them out of the back of the net as the game ended 2-0 in favor of the Owls.
Nicholas Morales (0-6-1) was the starting keeper in this one as he recorded seven saves in the contest.
This marks the end of the 2020-21 Harris-Stowe State University men's soccer season. The Hornets finished with a 1-6-1 overall record and a 0-3-1 mark in the American Midwest Conference. The Hornets will return to the field in the fall.
