ST. LOUIS – Harris-Stowe State University President, Dr. LaTonia Collins Smith, has announced that William A. Carey has been named the Director of Athletics; a position he has been serving in the interim since November 2021.

Entering his seventh year at Harris-Stowe State University, Carey has served in many roles within the department, most recently the Director of Eligibility and Compliance and Associate Director of Athletics for Internal Operations. While serving in those roles, Carey helped guide Harris-Stowe Athletics to having over a 3.0 cumulative GPA as well as earning the first Champions of Character Gold Star Institution Award in school history.

William A. Carey stated, "Thank you to Harris-Stowe State University President, Dr. LaTonia Collins Smith, as well as Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Dr. Shawn Baker, for giving me the opportunity to lead the Harris-Stowe State University Department of Athletics. I would also like to thank our coaches, staff and student athletes for their continued commitment to developing a championship culture within Harris-Stowe Athletics. Lastly, thank you to my wife, Lauren, my two boys, Patrick & Charles, my parents, Eric and Priscilla, my sister, Elizabeth, and my brother, Robert. My family is at the center of everything that I do and without their support, I would not be in the position that I am today."

Arriving at Harris-Stowe in the Fall of 2016, Carey served the men's basketball program as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for three years. In his first year, the Hornets went 19-13 and won their first American Midwest Conference (AMC) Tournament Championship in school history, earning them the program's first National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championship Tournament appearance. In 2017-2018, the program would follow up their success from the previous season by winning back-to-back AMC Tournament Championships and earning a second consecutive trip to the NAIA National Championships Tournament.

Prior to coming to Harris-Stowe, Carey served as an assistant men's basketball coach at Washington University in St. Louis for 3 seasons under 2x National Champion and Division III legend Mark Edwards. As an undergraduate at the University of Missouri, Carey had the opportunity to serve head coach, Frank Haith, and the Mizzou men's basketball program as a Student Manager from 2011 to 2013.

"To Hornet Nation - We will hold ourselves to the highest of standards in the classroom, community and field of play. We will be relentless in our pursuit of perfection, standing on the shoulders of those that came before us, in the hope of making you proud," said Carey.

Carey is a 2013 graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia having earned his bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. In 2016, Carey earned a master's degree in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Positive Coaching from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
