ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University men's basketball picked up a 110-102 win Monday night against Fontbonne University at Emerson Performance Center. With the win, the Hornets improve to 2-4 on the season while the Griffins fall to 0-1 on the season.
The Griffins and Hornets would trade field goals over the first 3:30 of the game with the Griffins holding an 11-10 lead. A jumper from junior forward
Jalen Watson (East St. Louis, Ill./St. Louis Community College) would cut the Griffins lead to 13-12 with 15:25 left in the first half. The Griffins would go on a 10-2 run to go up 23-14 before senior guard
Bennie Amos III (New Orleans, La./Delgado Community College) would hit threes on consecutive possessions to cut the Griffins lead to 23-20. A layup from senior guard
Freddy Reeves Jr. (Minneapolis, Mn. (Chardon State University) would cut the lead to 23-22 and continue the Hornets 8-0 run. Two free throws from senior guard
Seth Chargois (Tulsa, Okla./Johnson Community College) would give the Hornets a 24-23. Reeves Jr. would hit threes on back-to-back possessions to tie the game at 30 with 7:44 left in the half. A three from Amos III would cut the Griffins lead to 38-37 and start a 10-5 run to close the half that saw a layup from junior guard
Brandon Vigne (New Orleans, La./Delgado Community College), a jumper from Amos III, a layup from Watson, two free throws from senior forward
Ty Lampley (Belleville, Ill./Rend Lake Community College) and a jumper from Watson to close out the half and give the Hornets a 47-43 lead going into the half.
A layup from Watson and a three from Chargois would push the Hornets lead to 52-43 early in the second half. The Griffins would go on an 11-5 run to cut the Hornets lead to 57-54. A three from Chargois would push the lead to 64-56 and free throws from sophomore guard
Justin Coleman (St. Louis, Mo./Delta State University) would give the Hornets a 10 point lead. An old-fashioned three point play from Watson would give the Hornets a 69-58 lead with 13:10 left in the game. A three from Chargois would put the Hornets up 82-65 with just over 10 minutes to play. The Griffins would cut the deficit to 10 with 1:57 remaining before a layup from Lampley would give the Hornets a 103-93 lead with 1:10 left.Â
Watson would go for a game-high 28 points, while Chargois added 23, Amos III would add 22, Reeves Jr. would add 17 and Vigne would add 10 points. Chargois would record a team-high nine rebounds while Amos II added eight. Vigne would record seven assists while Amos III added six assists.Â
The Hornets went 35-67 (52.2 percent) from the field, 11-20 (55.0 percent) from three and 29-34 (85.3 percent) from the free throw line. The Hornets recorded season-highs in points, field goals made, free throws made and attempted, rebounds, and assists
