Men's Basketball Opens AMC Play with 80-73 Road Win Against Williams Baptist

Box Score WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. - Harris-Stowe State University men's basketball picked up an 80-73 win against Williams Baptist University on Thursday night. With the win ,the Hornets improve to 4-4 on the season and 1-0 in American Midwest Conference play while the Eagles fall to 3-3 and 0-1 in AMC play.

Senior guard Bennie Amos III (New Orleans, La./Delgado Community College) would hit a three, senior forward Keondre Brown (Los Angeles, Calif./Grandview University) would make a jumper and senior forward Jermarco Burse (Annapolis, Mo./Truman State University) would hit a three to give the Hornets an 8-2 lead with just under 15:30 to play in the first half. A quick 5-0 Eagles run would cut the Hornets lead to 8-7 before Brown and junior forward Ty Lampley (Belleville, Ill./Rend Lake Community College) would record layups and Amos III would make two free throws to put the Hornets up 14-7. The Eagles would go on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 14 with 11:20 to play in the first half. 

Senior guard Seth Chargois (Tulsa, Okla./Johnson Community College) would put the Hornets up 17-16 with a three of his own. Brown would record a jumper and Chargois would record a layup and convert the free throw for the three point play to put the Hornets up 22-16. After a three from Amos III and Chargois the Hornets would hold a 28-21 lead. Two free throws from junior forward Jalen Watson (East St. Louis, Ill./St. Louis Community College) and a three from Amos III would give the Hornets a 33-23 lead with 4:58 left in the half. Brown would add another jumper and Chargois would make another three to give the Hornets a 38-29 lead going into half.

Burse would give the Hornets their 10 point lead back with his second three of the game early in the second half. A layup and two threes from Amos III and a three from Brown would have the Hornets up 54-39 just over four minutes into the second half. After a jumper by the Eagles, Amos III would make another three to extend the lead to 57-41. A 10-4 run by the Eagles would cut the Hornets lead to 61-51 before a layup and free throw from Watson would push the lead back to 13 for the Hornets. A 15-6 run by the Eagles would cut the Hornets lead to 70-66 lead before Chargois would hit from three to give the Hornets a 73-66 lead. A 5-0 run by the Eagles would cut the deficit to 73-71 with 2:23 remaining. Chargois would hit three free throws to give the Hornets a 76-71 lead with 2:03 and it would help cap off the 80-73 Hornets win.

Amos III would go for a game-high 25 points, while Chargois added 24 points and Brown added 13 points. Brown would recorded 10 rebounds while Chargois added nine. Amos III added seven assists and three steals. Amos III would make six from behind the arc for 18 of his 25 points while Chargois would record 15 points from deep after making five threes.

The Hornets would go 27-65 (41.5%) from the field, 14-33 (42.4%) from three, and 12-14 (85.7%) at the free throw line. 

The Hornets continue AMC play on Saturday, November 23rd in Paragould, Ark. at 3 pm against Crowley's Ridge College.
