Hornets Basketball Falls to Culver-Stockton

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University men's basketball fell 93-85 to Culver-Stockton College on Saturday afternoon at Emerson Performance Center. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 1-2 on the season while the Wildcats improve to 2-2.

Junior guard Shamar Carter (Inglewood, Calif./Moberly Area CC) would give the Hornets a 2-1 lead before extending it to 5-1 with a three. A 9-0 Wildcats run would give them a 10-5 lead. A dunk by Carter and a jumper by sophomore guard Umar Lawson (Sumter, S.C./Voorhees University) would cut the deficit to 10-9. A jumper and a free throw by senior forward Umar Lawson (Belleville, Ill./Rend Lake Community College) cut the deficit to 15-12. A three by sophomore guard Antonio Trotter (Nashville, Tenn./Williams Baptist University) tied the game at 15. A jumper by senior forward Jalen Watson (East St. Louis, Ill./St. Louis Community College) and two free throws by freshman forward Nashawn Davis (St. Louis, Mo./Columbia College) gave the Hornets a 19-17 lead. 

A jumper by senior forward Dimitrije Stojanovic (Nis, Serbia/Bethel University) extended the lead to 21-17. A jumper by Watson made it 23-20 Hornets. A jumper by Trotter extended the lead to 25-22. A 10-0 run by the Wildcats gave them a 32-25 lead. A layup by junior guard Adolphus Cast (Detroit, Mich./Schoolcraft College) cut the deficit to 32-27. Cast would cut the deficit to 38-29 with a layup with just under four and a half minutes left in the first half. The Wildcats would close the first half with a 13-3 run to take a 51-32 lead into halftime.

A jumper by Watson cut the deficit to 53-34 early in the second half. A jumper by Lawson and a three by Carter cut the deficit to 55-39. A layup by Stojanovic cut the deficit to 63-41. A three by Trotter cut the deficit to 68-46. A jumper by Carter cut the deficit to 72-51 with 11:56 to play. A three by Carter and a jumper by Lawson cut the deficit to 74-60. A layup by Cast cut the deficit to 76-66 with 8:13 left. Back-to-back possessions with a jumper by Carter cut the deficit to 78-70. Back-to-back threes by Carter and Cast cut the Wildcats lead to 82-76. Jumpers from Trotter, Cast and Carter cut the deficit to 84-83 with 1:46 left. A 9-2 run by the Wildcats to close out the game would give them a 93-85 win.

Carter led the way with a game-high 28 points while Lawson added 16 and Cast and Trotter each recorded 11 points. Davis and Lawson each recorded six rebounds. Lawson recorded five assists. Trotter and Carter recorded four steals apiece. Carter added a block.

The Hornets went 36-73 (49.3%) from the field, 7-18 (38.9%) from three and 6-15 (40.0%) from the free throw line.

The Hornets return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 6 pm at Principia College in Elsah, Ill.
