PARAGOULD, Ark. - Harris-Stowe State University won 4-1 in game one and won 12-9 in game two of the doubleheader on Thursday morning and early afternoon at Crowley's Ridge. With the two wins, the Hornets finish the season 10-32 and 8-28 in American Midwest Conference play while the Pioneers fall to 8-42 and 6-30 in AMC play to conclude their season.
In game one, the Pioneers scored one in the bottom of the second to hold a 1-0 lead after two innings.Â
In the top of the third, senior third baseman
Malvin Gutierrez (Harlem, New York) reached on an infield single to third. A sacrifice bunt would move Gutierrez to second. Senior shortstop
Austin Martin (Roxana, Ill.) walked. A two-out single to center off the bat of sophomore catcher
Dima Cornell-Neal (Trumbull, Ct.) would score Gutierrez and tie the game at one. Senior outfielder
Skywalker Mann (Lee's Summit, Mo.) would reach on a single to score Martin to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead. Senior first baseman
Stephen Huggins (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) would single to right and score Cornell-Neal and Martin to make it 4-1 Hornets.
Gutierrez and Cornell-Neal led the way with two hits each while Mann, Huggins, freshman centerfielder
Adrian Martinez (Davie, Fla.) and junior first baseman
Logan Schwerdt (Saint Peters, Mo.) added one hit each. Junior right handed pitcher
Keke Romero (Mesa, Ariz.) recorded a complete game win allowing one earned run.
In game two, sophomore second baseman
Jordan Bradley (St. Louis, Mo.) reached on infield single to start the third. Martin was hit by pitch. Martinez singled to right to score Bradley to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Cornell-Neal reached on an infield single to load the bases. Mann singled to right to score Martinez and Cornell-Neal to make it 3-0 Hornets. Senior outfielder
Jeremy Kelly (Oranjestad, Aruba) would record a sacrifice fly to score Mann to make it 4-0.
The Pioneers would score one in the third to cut the Hornets lead to 4-1 going to the fourth. In the top of the fourth, Schwerdt was hit by pitch. Sophomore first baseman
Carter Henderson (San Diego, Calif.) singled to left. Both Schwerdt and Henderson advanced on a passed ball. Martin singled to left tos score Schwerdt to extend the Hornets lead to 5-1. The Pioneers would score seven in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-5 lead.
Mann singled to right with one out in the fifth. Gutierrez singled to left with two outs. Schwerdt singled to center to sore Mann to make it 8-6 Pioneers. Gutierrez would score on a passed ball to make it 8-7. Henderson singled to left to score Schwerdt to tie the game at eight.
Martin started the sixth with an infield single. Martinez singled to right. Martin scored on a passed ball to make it 9-8 Hornets. Mann doubled to left to score Martinez to make it 10-8. Kelly singled to center to score Mann to make it 11-8. The Pioneers cut it to 11-9 with a run in the sixth.
Senior outfielder
Za'Maree Tillman (Bakersfield, Calif.) homered to left to make it 12-9 Hornets in the seventh.
Mann led the way with three hits while Martin, Martinez and Henderson added two hits and Cornell-Neal, freshman middle infielder
Khalil Smith (Memphis, Tenn.), Kelly, Gutierrez, Schwerdt, Bradley and Tillman each had a hit. Sophomore right handed pitcher Levi LaLonde (Lonedell, Mo.) would pick up the win after tossing 3.1 innings in relief allowing two runs with one being earned.
The Hornets will return to action in 2026.
