Lady Hornets Volleyball Falls in Five Set Battle at Principia

ELSAH, Ill. - Harris-Stowe State University women's volleyball fall in five tough sets (25-18, 21-25, 25-16, 25-27, 17-19) on Saturday afternoon at Principia College. With the loss, the Lady Hornets fall to 2-5 on the season while the Panthers improve to 1-2 on the season.

Senior defensive specialist and libero Makayla Hernandez (San Antonio, Texas/Lawton) recorded back-to-back service aces to give the Lady Hornets a 3-0 lead in set one. A kill from sophomore outside hitter Serenity Baker (Desoto, Texas/Desoto) and a kill from freshman outside hitter Renise Powell 5-1. Freshman right-side hitter Codi Thompson made it 9-3 Lady Hornets with a kill. The Panthers would use a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 10-9 in favor of the Lady Hornets. A kill from junior middle hitter Saniah Files (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) and Baker recorded kills to push the lead to 14-9. A block by Powell and freshman middle blocker Kourtlyn Dowell pushed the lead to 17-12. Kills from senior A'nyla Watson (Little Rock, Ark./North Little Rock) and by Thompson pushed the lead to 22-17. Files, Thompson and Watson would record kills to give the Lady Hornets set one 25-18.

In set two, a kill by Baker would tie the score at two. A block by Files and Bakers cut the deficit to 4-3. A kill by junior outside hitter Kyla McReynolds (O'Fallon, Ill./Althoff Catholic) cut the deficit to 8-4. A kill by McReynolds cut the deficit to 9-7. A 6-1 run by the Panthers pushed their lead to 17-9. A block by Files and a kill by Baker cut the deficit to 17-11. Three kills from McReynolds, two attack errors by the Panthers and a service ace by freshman libero Mya Hendrix cut the deficit to 20-17. A kill by Files cut the deficit to 24-21. The Panthers would take set two 25-21. 

A service ace by junior defensive specialist Alexis Kemp (Kansas, City, Mo./University Academy) made it 2-0 Lady Hornets in set three. A kill from McReynolds and Files and a service ace by defensive specialist Dejah Foster (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) made it 5-3 Lady Hornets. A 5-0 run by the Panther gave them an 8-5 lead. A 6-4 Lady Hornets run cut their deficit to 12-11. A kill by sophomore middle hitter Jehireh Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Althoff Catholic) cut the deficit to 13-12. A 4-0 run by the Lady Hornets gave them a 16-14 lead. A kill by McReynolds and Files, a Foster ace and a block by Files and Baker pushed the Lady Hornets lead to 20-15. A kill by McReynolds, a block by Baker, back-to-back aces by junior setter Brianah Dawson (Dallas, Texas/South Oak Cliff High School/Wells College) and another kill by McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets a 25-16 win in set three and a 2-1 lead in the match. 

In set four, an attack error by the Panthers, a kill by Kemp, an attack error by the Panthers, a block by Williams and an attack error by the Panthers gave the Lady Hornets a 5-0 lead. A kill and a block by Williams and a kill by McReynolds pushed the lead to 8-1. Kills by McReynolds and Kemp and an ace from Foster made the lead 11-4 Lady Hornets. A 5-1 Panthers run cut the Lady Hornets lead to 12-9. A Files ace made it 15-10. A kill and block by Williams pushed the lead to 17-12. Two kills and a block by Williams pushed the lead to 20-13. A kill from Williams, an ace by Foster and an error by the Panther pushed the lead to 23-14. A 13-2 run by the Panthers gave them a 27-25 set four win to force a fifth and deciding set.

A kill by Kemp and McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets a 2-0 lead in set five. An ace by Kemp pushed the lead to 5-2. A kill by Files, back-to-back attack errors by the Panthers, a kill by Watson and a kill by Thompson gave the Lady Hornets a 12-7 lead. A 5-0 run by the Panthers tied set five at 12. A kill by Williams tied set five at 14. A kill by Williams tied the score at 17. The Panthers would score the final two points of set five to win 19-17 and take the match 3-2.

McReynolds recorded a career-high 19 kills. Junior setter Isa Smith (Little Rock, Ark./Joe T. Robinson) recorded a career-high 26 assists. Williams tied her career-high with nine kills. Files recorded a career-high seven kills. Smith recorded her second double-double of the season with her 15 digs in the match. McReynolds recorded her first double-double of the season with her 19 kills and 14 digs, which was a season-high in digs. Dawson recorded a season-high 17 assists and three aces. 

Williams recorded four solo blocks in the match and Files added two solo blocks and three block assists. Foster led the way with four service aces.

The Lady Hornets recorded season-highs in kills (58), digs (69), assists (52), aces (16) and total blocks (12.0).

The Lady Hornets return to action on Tuesday, September 9th at 6 pm as they open American Midwest Conference play at Hannibal-LaGrange in Hannibal, Mo.
