Hornets Soccer Falls 1-0 to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University men's soccer fell 1-0 to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Ritter High School. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 2-2-1 on the season while the Pomeroys improve to 2-4 on the season.

Senior forward Mario De La Fuente (Madrid, Spain/Mid America Christian University) had a chance to give the Hornets an early lead, but would be denied in the third minute of the game. Senior goalie Matheus Pereira da Silva (Santo Andre, SP, Brazil/Columbia College) would make a save on a Pomeroys header in the ninth minute. De La Fuente would have another chance in the 38th minute, but would miss wide. The best chance for the Hornets would come off of a header by senior forward Kyle Nicholls (Norwich, England/Mineral Area College) as he would beat the Pomeroys keeper, but couldn't find the net as the header went off the crossbar in the 44th minute. The game would remain tied at 0-0 at halftime.

Senior midfielder Leonardo Mori (Castel d'Azzano, Italy/Liceo Galileo Galilei) and Nicholls would each have a chance just seconds apart from each other as the Pomeroys keeper would make the save against both of them. Pereira da Silva would keep the game scoreless in the 73rd minute with a save. Just over a minute later, the Pomeroys would take a 1-0 lead. 

Nicholls and De La Fuente would lead the way with two shots each. Pereira da Silva would make three saves in net.

The Pomeroys held an 11-7 advantage in shots and 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Hornets held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Hornets return to action on Wednesday, September 10th at 5:30 pm at Brescia in Owensboro, Ky.
