Lady Hornets Softball Fall Twice at Oakwood


HUNTSVILLE, Al. - Harris-Stowe State University softball fell 7-6 in both games of the doubleheader Monday afternoon at Oakwood University. With the losses, the Lady Hornets fall to 0-2 on the season and the Ambassadors improve to 4-0 on the season. 

 

Game 1:

Junior second baseman Rakiara Bogan (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Mineral Area College) led off the game reaching on an error and then stole second and third. Junior outfielder Karmen Daniels (St. Louis, Mo./Fontbonne University) would hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Bogan and make it 1-0 Lady Hornets in the top of the first. 

 

The Ambassadors would score three runs in the third and fifth innings to take a 6-1 lead into the top of the sixth. 

 

Senior shortstop Juanesha Washington (St. Louis, Mo./Carnahan) led off the top of the sixth with a bunt single. Bogan would reach on a bunt to third and Washington and Bogan would both score because of a throwing error to cut the deficit to 6-3. Daniels would reach on a bunt single then steal second. Senior outfielder Noemi Tudon (Houston, Texas/Waldorf University) would walk to make it first and second with nobody out. A one out double from sophomore catcher Brianna Huff (Columbus, Ohio Private/Tree of Life Christian College Preparatory High School) scored Daniels to make it 6-4. A single by freshman infielder Crystal McFerren (St. Louis, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North) singled home Tudon to cut it to 6-5. Washington would reach on another bunt with the bases loaded and two outs to score Huff to tie the game at six.

 

The Ambassadors would score in the bottom of the seventh to win 7-6.

 

Junior utility player A'Kiayah Scales (St. Louis, Mo./Mineral Area College) and Washington both recorded two hits. Bogan, Daniels, Huff, McFerren and Washington all recorded a run batted in. Bogan recorded two stolen bases and two runs scored.

 

Game 2:

Bogan would single to start game two. Daniels would follow up with a double. Scales reached on a bunt single to load the bases with one out. The Lady Hornets would fail to score in the top of the first. The Ambassadors would score four runs in the bottom of the first.

 

Junior pitcher Symone Abraham (Decatur, Ill./Livingstone College) and Washington would walk with one out in the second. A bunt single by Bogan loaded the bases. A walk to Daniels would score Abraham. A walk to Tudon scored Washington. A single by Scales scored Bogan. McFerren would be hit by a pitch to score Daniels and tie the game at four. 

 

The Ambassadors scored twice in the bottom of the second and once in the fourth to hold a 7-4 lead after four innings.

 

Senior middle infielder Sarah Talbott (West Palm Beach, Fla./CUNY Hunter College) and Abraham would both walk with one out. A two out single by Bogan loaded the bases. A single to left from Daniels scored Abraham and Talbott to cut the deficit to 7-6. 

Scales and Bogan recorded three hits each while Daniels recorded two. Daniels recorded three runs batted in while Tudon, Scales and McFerren had one. Abraham scored two runs.

 

The Lady Hornets return to action on Friday, February 27th at 2 and 4 pm in Holly Springs, Miss. against Rust.
