Lady Hornets Soccer Earns Hard Fought 2-1 Win at William Woods


FULTON, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University women's soccer picked up a 2-1 win at William Woods University on Saturday evening. The Lady Hornets improve to 2-0 on the season while the Owls fall to 0-1 on the season.

 

Senior defender Luka Gorogranz (Berlin, Germany/Dodge City CC) had a chance to give the Lady Hornets a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute as the Owls keeper would keep the game scoreless. Senior midfielder Keziah Oluoch (Nairobi, Kenya/St. Louis Community College) would have her  first shot saved and her second shot would find the back of the net to give the Lady Hornets a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. The Owls would tie the game in the 19th minute. 

 

Forward Naomi Mangiapane (Solingen, Germany/Western Iowa Tech CC) would be denied her second goal of the season in the 29th minute by the Owls keeper. Just over a minute later, Mangiapane would sneak the ball past the keeper to the far post to give the Lady Hornets a 2-1 lead. Junior forward Clara Rosseto Pelegrina (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Oakland City University/University of Jamestown) would have two chances to extend the lead with one in the 37th minute and in the 39th minute as the Owls keeper made the save on both shot attempts. The Lady Hornets held a 2-1 lead at halftime.

 

Goalkeeper Genesis Rhodes (St. Louis, Mo./Fontbonne University/Webster University) kept the Lady Hornets ahead with a save in the 49th minute. Gorogranz would be turned away by the Owls keeper in the 51st minute. Mangipane would be denied her second goal of the game in the 55th minute. Forward Katia Hussein (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada/Mineral Area College) would have her shot saved in the 57th minute as the Lady Hornets came out in the first 15 minutes of the second half to extend the lead. Rhodes would keep the score 2-1 in favor of the Lady Hornets with a save in the 65th minute. The Lady Hornets would keep the Owls from finding the equalizer in the second half.

 

Rhodes made three saves in the second half to help the Lady Hornets earn a hard fought 2-1 win.

 

The Lady Hornets held an 11-7 advantage in shots and 10-4 in shots on goal while the Owls had both corner kicks.

 

The Lady Hornets return to action on Wednesday, August 26th at 5 pm at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo.
