NEVADA, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University women's volleyball picked up a five set win (23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 21-25, 15-13) on Tuesday night at Cottey. With the win, the Lady Hornets improve to 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in American Midwest Conference while the Comets fall to 5-9 on the season and 0-3 in AMC play.

A kill from senior right side hitter Trinity Edison (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Central High School) and a block by Edison and sophomore middle blocker Ayanna-Rae Leblanc gave the Lady Hornets an early 2-0 lead in set one. A 6-1 Comets run gave them a 6-3 lead. A kill from senior outside hitter Kyla McReynolds (O'Fallon, Ill./Althoff Catholic High School) cut the deficit to 6-4. A 7-3 run by the Comets extended their lead to 14-7. Back-to-back kills from senior outside hitter Alexis Kemp (Kansas City, Mo./University Academy) and back-to-back attack errors by the Comets cut the deficit to 14-11. A service ace from sophomore defensive specialist Mya Hendrix, a kill from McReynolds and an attack error by the Comets tied the score at 17. A kill and ace by McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets a 19-18 lead. A kill by Leblanc and Edison tied the score at 22 before the Comets scored three of the final four points to take set one.

A kill by McReynolds tied the set at two. A 5-0 Comets run gave them a 7-2 lead. Three straight attack errors by the Comets cut the deficit to 7-5. A kill from Kemp and an attack error by the Comets cut the deficit to 10-8. A kill by Leblanc and McReynolds, an attack error by the Comets and a kill by Edison gave the Lady Hornets a 14-12 lead. The Lady Hornets and Comets would trade points to be tied at 21. A block by Edison and sophomore middle blocker Kourtlyn Dowell (Daingerfield, Texas/Jefferson High School) cut the deficit to 23-22. Back-to-back kills by junior outside hitter Jordyn Williams, a kill by Dowell and an attack error by the Comets turned a 24-22 deficit into a 26-24 set two win to tie the match at one set a piece.

A service error and attack error by the Comets and a block by Dowell gave the Lady Hornets a 3-2 lead early in set three. Back-to-back attack errors by the Comets, a kill from Dowell, two more attack errors and a ball handling error by the Comets gave the Lady Hornets a 9-4 lead. A kill from Kemp ended a 3-0 Comets run to give the Lady Hornets a 13-9 lead. A kill from McReynolds and two attack errors by the Comets made it 16-11 in favor of the Lady Hornets. A kill by McReynolds made it 20-18 Lady Hornets. A kill from Kemp and McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets a 25-23 set three win.

A kill from Edison made it 3-2 early in set four. A block by Williams and Leblanc extended the lead to 7-4. A 6-0 run by the Comets gave them an 11-8 lead. A kill from McReynolds and a block by Edison and Leblanc tied the score at 11. Kills from Edison and Kemp gave the Lady Hornets a 15-13 lead. A 7-3 run by the Comets gave them a 20-18 lead. A kill from Kemp cut the deficit to 20-19. The Comets closed set four on a 5-2 run to take the set and force a fifth and decisive set.

The Comets started set five with a 5-1 run. A kill from Leblanc cut the deficit to 5-2. A block from McReynolds and Dowell, an attack error by the Comets, back-to-back kills from McReynolds and a setting error by the Comets gave the Lady Hornets a 7-6 lead. Back-to-back leads from Kemp gave the Lady Hornets a 10-8 lead. A 4-1 run by the Lady Hornets that featured three kills from McReynolds turned a 12-11 deficit into a 15-13 set five win and a 3-2 match win.

McReynolds led the way with a season-high 19 kills while Kemp had a career-high 15 kills. Williams had a season-high 25 assists while senior setter Brianah Dawson (Dallas, Texas/South Oak Cliff High School/Wells College) added 12 assists. Senior defensive specialist Dejah Foster (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods High School) had a career-high 50 digs, Kemp had a career-high 22 digs, Hendrix tied her career-high with 13 digs and McReynolds added 13 digs. The Lady Hornets recorded 109 digs in the match. Leblanc added five block assists. McReynolds and Hendrix recorded a service ace.

The Lady Hornets return to action on Saturday, September 19th at 10:30 am against Hannibal-LaGrange University and 12:30 pm against Central Baptist College in AMC play. Both matches will be played at the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis.
