ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Harris-Stowe State University women's basketball team was back in action when they played host to the 22
nd ranked Lyon (Ark.) College Scots in an AMC matchup. The Hornets were defeated by the Scots by a final score of 69-51 to fall to 3-5 on the season and 3-2 in the American Midwest Conference. With the win, the Scots improve their record to 7-0 on the year and 7-0 in the AMC.
Harris-Stowe came out in the first quarter of the game and had a tough time getting anything going as they found themselves down 11-2 midway through the frame. They picked it up over the next few minutes of the contest and were able to cut the lead to 12-7 heading into the second. They continued to battle to start the second and were able to tie the score at 18 with five minutes to play in the half. However, a 15-2 run from the Scots to end the quarter put them up 33-20 at the break.
The Scots carried over their momentum into the second half and were able to extend their lead to 18 midway through the third. They continued to push the tempo down the final stretch of the frame and were able to grow their lead to 53-31 heading into the final quarter. Harris-Stowe did their best to get back into the game in the fourth and were able to cut the lead to 16, but that would be as close as they would get as the Scots closed out the game to hand the Hornets their second straight loss.
The Hornets had a tough time finding the bottom of the basket in this one as they went just 18-for-62 (29.0%) from the floor and 6-for-27 (22.2%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded 45-44 and turned the ball over 16 times.
Taia Smith led the way for the Hornets as she finished with a game high 12 rebounds while also adding 10 points. In addition to Smith,
Ronne'zje Elliot finished with 10 points and a team high three assists while
Tarsheia Page added eight points and six rebounds to round out the top performers for the Hornets.
The Hornets will return to the court on Tuesday, January 26
th when they travel down the street to the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis for an AMC matchup at 5:30 p.m. No spectators will be allowed to attend but live stats and video will be provided.
