Hornets Drop Heartbreaker in Conference Opener

ST. LOUIS – The Harris-Stowe Hornets dropped the conference opener against the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy Eutectics, 74-73, in an overtime heartbreaker.

HSSU scored first on a layup by J'Lessa Jordan, prior to the contest being tied on a layup by UHSP's Grace Beyer. The Hornets broke the tie on a three-pointer at the hands of Deyana Dodd. A quick turnover and steal allowed Harris-Stowe to increase their lead to five. After leading by as many as eight, the first quarter ended with the Hornets up 19-15.

In the second, Surina Finnie landed a layup on a fastbreak to increase the point margin to six. The Euts' Faith Oliver returned the layup to bring the Hornets lead back to four. This appeared to add fuel to the ladies from Harris-Stowe, as they went on a seven point run over the next three minutes, however, UHSP was not out of the contest as they were able to successfully put on a run of their own. Entering halftime, the score was 33-32, in favor of the Eutectics.

The third and fourth quarters continued with both teams working furiously to gain and maintain the edge. Despite their efforts, with a pair of free-throws, UHSP was able to tie the contest, sending the two teams into overtime.

Overtime, was an intense experience for everyone as it literally came down to the final second of the game. Harris-Stowe was up by three with 48 seconds remaining in a pair of free-throws. At 39-seconds, Beyer went to the line for the Eutectics to make both, bringing UHSP within one of the Hornets. Beyers scored a layup with one second remaining in overtime to claim the victory for the Euts.

Destiney Amaefula paced Harris-Stowe with 18-points, five rebounds, three steals and two rebounds; while Deyana Dodd recorded 17-points, eight steals, six assists, four rebounds and one block. Surina Finnie added, 13-points, three rebounds and two steals.

For the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy, Grace Beyer paced the team with 45-points.

The Hornets will host the Spartans of Missouri Baptist University on Saturday, December 4th at 1:00 pm.
