FOREST CITY, Iowa – This afternoon the Harris-Stowe State University baseball team was back in action when they traveled to Forest City, Iowa, to take on the Waldorf (Iowa) University Warriors for the first two games of a four game set. The Hornets lost both games of the doubleheader as they lost the first game by a final score of 8-2 and the second game by a final score of 3-2 to fall to 3-5 on the season. With the sweep, the Warriors improve to 3-7 on the season.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Hornets put together seven hits in the 8-2 loss. The Warriors got off to a quick start in the game as they scored two runs in the bottom of the second to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. The Hornets bounced back and scored a run in the top of the third to make the score 2-1, but six runs from the Warriors over the next three innings put them up 8-1 heading into the seventh. Harris-Stowe did their best to get back into the game and were able to cut the lead to 8-2, but that was as close as they would get as the Warriors picked up the final outs to solidify the win.
Alex Williams (1-1) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed nine hits and five earned runs while striking out five in 5.0 innings on the mound.
Brian Myers (1-0) came in to relieve Williams as he allowed one hit and one earned run in the final inning of the game.
Alek Sierra led the way at the plate for the Hornets as he went 3-for-3 with a run scored. In addition to Sierra,
Davie Pound went 1-for-4 with an RBI and
Brendan Claus added an RBI to round out the top performers for the Hornets.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Hornets put together eight hits a 3-2 loss. The Hornets got on the board first in this one as they scored a run in the top of the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The Warriors responded quickly and were able to score one run in each of the next two innings to take a 2-1 advantage. Harris-Stowe bounced back and were able to tie the score at two in the top of the fourth, but a run from the Warriors in the bottom of the seventh solidified the victory.
Armando Sierra (0-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed six hits and three earned runs while striking out four in 6.0 innings on the mound.
James Shaw (0-0) came in to relieve Sierra as he allowed one hit while striking out one in the final 0.1 innings of the game.
Will Menendez led the way for the Hornets as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI. In addition to Menendez,
Dennis Jordan went 1-for-3 with a solo homerun.
The Hornets will return to the diamond tomorrow, March 14
th when they take on the Warriors for the final two games of a four game series. The first game of the doubleheader is set to start at noon with the second to follow.
