Hornets Fall To Eagles in Doubleheader

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – The Harris-Stowe State University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they took on the Williams Baptist (Ark.) University Eagles in the final two games of a four game series. The Hornets were swept in the doubleheader as they lost the first game by a final score of 12-4 and the second game by a final score of 3-2 in extra innings to fall to 5-9 on the year and 1-3 in the American Midwest Conference. With the sweep, the Eagles improve to 7-7 on the season and 3-1 in the AMC.

In the first game of the doubleheader the Hornets had a tough time getting anything going. The Eagles got on the board early as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. They continued to put the ball in play over the next few innings and were able to score two runs in the bottom of the third and seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 12-0 lead. Harris-Stowe did their best to get back into the game and were able to score four runs in the final three innings, but that was as close as they would get as the Eagles picked up the final outs to solidify the win.

The box score for this game is currently unavailable.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Hornets put together nine hits in the contest. They were in a defensive battle all game as neither side was able to get any runs across the plate through the first six innings of the game. Harris-Stowe was finally able to get on the board in the top of the seventh when Maurice La Fon was able to drive in two runs to give the Hornets the 2-0 lead. The Hornets continued to play tough defense over the next few innings, but two runs from the Eagles in the bottom of the ninth tied the game and sent it to extra innings. The game went back and forth over the next couple of innings but ultimately the Eagles would score in the bottom of the 12th to solidify the doubleheader sweep.

Dajuan Griffin got the start in this one as he allowed just six hits and two earned runs while striking out a career high 11 batters in 8.2 innings of work. James Shaw (0-2) came in to relieve Griffin, allowing two hits while striking out two in the final 2.2 innings of the game. Maurice La Fon led the way at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI. In addition to La Fon, Alek Sierra went 3-for-5 with a run scored and Luke Lampros went 1-for-3 with a run scored to round out the top performers for the Hornets.

The Hornets will return to the field on Tuesday, March 23rd when they travel to St. Louis Community College to take on the Archers for a junior varsity doubleheader starting at noon. The varsity team will return to the field on Friday, March 26th when they travel to Columbia (Mo.) College to take on the Cougars in the first two games of a four game series. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m.
