Hornets Fall to Stars in Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Harris-Stowe State University volleyball team was back in action this evening when they traveled to Columbia, Missouri, to take on the Stephens (Mo.) College Stars in an AMC matchup. The Hornets were defeated by the Stars in three straight sets (13-25, 16-25, 12-25) to fall to 1-10 on the season and 0-9 in the American Midwest Conference. With the win, the Stars improve to 4-9 on the year and 2-6 in the AMC.

Harris-Stowe came out in the first set of the match and found themselves trailing 8-3 early. The Hornets struggled to get anything going and the Stars pushed their lead to 16-5. Harris-Stowe battled back and cut the lead to 10 but that was as close as they would get as the Stars picked up the final points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second game of the match, the Hornets found themselves trailing 12-3 early. They picked it up as the game progressed and used a 6-3 run to cut the lead to 15-9 midway through the set. However, the Stars responded with a 6-3 run of their own to stretch their lead to 21-12 and cruised to a second set win.

Harris-Stowe struggled to start the third set as the Stars jumped out to an 8-1 lead. Harris-Stowe bounced back and were able to cut the lead to three, but a 12-3 run from the Stars put them up 23-11 late in the game. The Hornets did their best to get back into the game but the Stars picked up the final points to solidify the sweep.

Kyanae Toombs led the way for the Hornets as she finished with a team high seven kills. In addition to Toombs, Ariel Stroud finished with six kills, Valorie Walker finished with a team high 11 assists, and Junoria Worthy finished with a game high 15 digs to round out the top performers for the Hornets.

The Hornets will return to the court tomorrow, March 31st when they travel to the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis to take on the Eutectics in a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 7 p.m. No visiting team spectators will be allowed to attend.
