ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Harris-Stowe State University baseball team was back in action when they played host the Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University Trojans in the final two games of the four game series. The Hornets split the doubleheader with the Trojans as they lost the first game by a final score of 3-1 and won the second game by a final score of 20-3 to improve to 8-14 on the season and 4-8 in the AMC. With the split, the Trojans improve to 10-12 on the year and 3-9 in the AMC.
Harris-Stowe put together five hits in the first game of the doubleheader. The Trojans came out of the gate and scored a run in the top of the first and run in the top of the third to take an early 2-0 lead. The Hornets battled back and were able to bring a run across in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 2-1 midway through the game. Neither side was able to get anything going offensively over the next couple innings, but a run from the Trojans in the top of the seventh solidified the win.
Raul Alvarez (1-3) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out six in 6.1 innings of work.
Dennis Jordan came in to relieve Alvarez as he did not allow a hit while striking out one in the final 0.2 innings of the game.
Matt Janocik led the way offensively as he went 1-for-2 with a solo homerun. In addition,
Will Crooker went 2-for-3 to round out the top performers for the Hornets.
The Hornets bats were rolling in the second game as they put together 13 hits in the contest. They got on the board first in this one as they scored one run in the bottom of the first and five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 6-0 lead. The Trojans bounced back and scored three runs in the top of the third, but seven runs from the Hornets in the bottom of the fourth put them up 13-3 in the contest. Harris-Stowe continued to put the ball in play as the game progressed and scored seven runs in the fourth, two runs in the fifth, and five runs in the sixth to solidify the split.
Alex Williams (2-3) got the start in this one as he allowed five hits and three earned runs while striking out three in 4.0 innings of work.
James Shaw,
Dennis Jordan, and
Preston Burnett came in to relieve Williams as the three combined to allow one hit while striking out four in 3.0 scoreless innings. The long ball was working for the Hornets in this game as they hit seven homeruns in the contest.
Brendan Claus and
Maurice La Fon led the way for the Hornets as both finished with two homeruns for a combined 10 RBI. In addition,
Will Crooker,
Luke Lampros, and
Turner McDonald all went yard in the game.
The Hornets return to the field on Monday, April 5
th when they travel to Fontbonne (Mo.) University to take on the Griffins in a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 2 p.m.
