ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Harris-Stowe State University softball team was back in action when they traveled to the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis to take on the Eutectics in an AMC doubleheader. The Hornets were swept in the doubleheader as they lost the first game by a final score of 26-0 and the second game by a final score of 21-1 to fall to 0-9 on the season. With the sweep, the Eutectics improve to 4-12 on the year and 3-5 in the AMC.
The Hornets put together two hits in the first game of the doubleheader. The Eutectics got on the board first in this one as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first and 21 runs in the bottom of the second to take a 24-0 lead in the game. The Hornets picked it up as the game progressed and were able to hold them scoreless in the third. However, the Eutectics scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth and picked up the final outs of the game to solidify the win.
Brandi Bradford (0-8) was in the circle for this one as she allowed 16 hits and just four earned runs while striking out one in 4.0 innings.
Kyrah Greer and
Anna Wheeler led the way at the plate for the Hornets as they both recorded hits in the contest.
Harris-Stowe continued to struggle offensively in the second game as they were held to just three hits in the contest. The Eutectics scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first, two runs in the bottom of the second, seven runs in the bottom of the third, and two runs in the bottom of the fourth to jump out to a 21-0 lead. The Hornets did their best to get back into the game, and were able to score a run in the top of the fifth, but that was as close as they would get as the Eutectics picked up the final outs of the game to solidify the sweep.
Brandi Bradford (0-9) was the starter in this one as she allowed nine hits in 1.0 inning.
Zaria Palmer and Ramani Atuatasi came in to relieve Bradford as the two combined to allow seven hits in the final 3.0 innings of the game.
Anna Wheeler led the way for the Hornets as she went 1-for-3 with an RBI. In addition,
Kyrah Greer went 1-for-3 with a run scored, and
Caitlyn Chandler with 1-for-1 to round out the top performers for the Hornets.
The Hornets will return to the field tomorrow, April 7
th when they play host to the Crowley's Ridge (Ark.) College Pioneers in a nonconference doubleheader at Stars Park. The first game of the doubleheader is set to start at noon with the second game to follow. Spectators will be limited to guests on the softball teams pass list.
