FULTON, Mo. – Harris-Stowe men's soccer extended their winning streak to six games with a victory over American Midwest Conference rival William Woods University on Saturday afternoon. The win improves their record to 7-1 to begin the year.
The Hornets earned an all-around team victory in Fulton, Missouri, as the offense supplied consistent pressure to the tune of 18 shot attempts and 10 shots on goal while the defense allowed just five shots from the Owls.
The men were outplaying the opposition from the start, firing seven shots in the first half alone. Unfortunately for the visitors, none of them found the back of the net. Starting goalie Joshua Precious kept his team in the game, stopping both shots on goal against to head into halftime tied a zero.
Harris-Stowe continued to add pressure early in the second half on a shot on goal from Mickel Ravello that was saved by Owls' goalie Iker Gonzalez. However, the Hornets got overambitious with the offensive push and received two yellow cards just three minutes apart.
Massimo Kluver sent one on goal at 50:52 to set up a corner kick following the second card. One minute later, Ricardo Benini finally found the back of the net for his team, breaking the tie with his fifth goal of the season.
William Woods responded immediately. It took just 30 seconds for Michael Bhat to tie the game in the 52nd minute.
Determined to regain the lead, the HSSU tallied three more shots on goal in the next three minutes the led up to an Owls' own goal assisted by Ricardo Benini.
The Hornets' defense would allow just one more shot to be taken before completing the 2-1 road victory. In total, Harris-Stowe State outshot the home team 18-5, took seven more corner kicks, and tallied seven more shots on goal.
HSSU men's soccer will look to keep the winning streak alive on Monday, September 27, against Talladega College. The kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Hornet Field.
