ST. LOUIS, MO. – Harris-Stowe State University men's soccer picked up their fourth victory of the season over St. Mary-of-the-Woods College Tuesday afternoon. The Hornets rode a couple of early goals to a 2-1 win over the Pomeroys to improve their record to 4-1.
Sophomore midfielder
Ricardo Benini scored the first goal for the home team at the 11-minute mark after a pass from
Juan Sebastian Moreno put him in scoring position. Four and a half minutes later, Benini struck again, this time off of a pass from
Anthony Medina.
The Hornets continued to apply the pressure offensively, posting three more in the first half and seven more in the second.
The Pomeroys did not go down without a fight, however. The visitors fired seven shots in the second half, including a Juan Parra goal to set up a comeback bid with just 15 minutes remaining.
HSSU's defense put the game on lockdown for those remaining 15 minutes, allowing no more shots after the goal from Parra.
Justin Donovan and
Ricardo Benini led the offense with two shots on goal, with the lone two goals coming from Benini.
Joshua Precious backed up the solid defensive play with two saves on three shots on goal.
Next for men's soccer is another home contest on Wednesday, September 15, at 3 p.m. against Iowa Wesleyan University.
