ST. LOUIS – The Harris-Stowe Hornets dropped their American Midwest Conference season opener to Stephens College 66-55.
The opening quarter saw HSSU outpace SC 16-8. The second half swung in favor of the Stars, however, the Hornets were able to carry a 26-23 lead into the locker room for halftime.
During the second half, Stephens applied pressure on both ends of the court and was able to outscore the Hornets 23-16 in the third and 20-23 in the final ten minutes.
Destiney Amaefula paced Harris-Stowe with 18 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block. Taia Smith scored 12 points, six rebounds and one steal. Autumn Brown added 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The Hornets travel to Hannibal, Missouri on Saturday to face the Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange University. Tip-off is set for 1:00 pm.
