ST. LOUIS – The Hornets volleyball team were able to go the distance against the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in an American Midwest Conference contest; winning the contest 3-2.
Breakdown per set: 25-20, 25-20, 25-14, 25-21, 15-10
In the opening set, things appeared to be going in favor of the Euts, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Jayden Sortor stepped up and landed a stunning kill for the Hornets to pause scoring for UHSP. At one point in the set, Harris-Stowe trailed 11-5; however, an amazing run by the Hornets closed the gap to 11-9. It was only a matter of time before the Hornets were able to knot the score at 14. With rallies from both teams, UHSP was able to claim the first set.
The second set's score was the same as the first except the Hornets took the win. The set opened with HSSU going on a five-point run. Both teams battled through several great rallies, however the Hornets were able to come out on top.
In the third set, UHSP appeared to have the edge as they were able to go up 2-1, with their 25-14 win. Down but far from out, Harris-Stowe showed true grit as they took the fourth set 25-21 and the match with a 15-10 win in the fifth.
With three Hornets recorded double-digit kills, it was a great night for HSSU. Ariel Stroud paced the team with 14, while Ariyonna Johnson and Sortor tallied 13 and 10, respectively. A'Nia Ware dominated in assists with 42. Nickeal Clark dug deep, recording 19 digs for the Hornets; while Mallorie Wooten added 14 and Arneka McReynolds finished with 10.
"We worked hard this game. We've been working on executing our plan and going with what works for us. We made we stayed in it and came out on top with the last point. I'm super proud of these young ladies," said Head Coach Brittany Stewart.
Harris-Stowe will travel to Hannibal, Missouri, to face Hannibal-LaGrange on Thursday, September 29th at 6:00 pm.
