Baseball Falters in Double on Opening Day

ST. LOUIS – The Hornets baseball team opened the 2023 season in Millington, Tennessee, at the Flag City Classic. On the first day, the Hornets fell 11-3 in game one and 13-6 in the second. Both contests were against the University of St. Francis (Illinois).

Game One:

Neither team was able to score in the opening inning but were able to push one run in each in the second. In the third, St. Francis scored six runs, three in the fourth and one in the fifth. Harris-Stowe scored two in the fifth as well. The sixth and seventh inning were scoreless.

A sacrifice fly by Will Menendez to centerfield allowed Hunter Miller to cross home plate to put the Hornets on the board. In the fifth, Hunter Miller doubled into right field scoring Jack Boland and Alek Sierra.

Raul Alvarez took the loss for the Hunters on the mound.

Game Two:

Facing Saint Francis in game two, the Hornets went down 2-0 after the first inning. HSSU knotted the score at two in the bottom of the second. The third was scoreless for both teams, however, USF was able to add an additional run in the top of the first. The fifth was scoreless for both. In the sixth, St. Francis scored three, while Harris-Stowe scored one. The Hornets scored three in the seventh. The eighth saw USF scored seven runs.

A single from Cam Pratt to right field scored Austin Toler and Devin Rader. In the sixth, Toler singled to left field, earning an RBI, scoring Julian Cintel. In the seventh, Cintel homered to right field scoring Hunter Miller and Derek Rivera.

Dakota Gaines took the loss for the Hornets from the pitcher's mound.
