ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University men's basketball picked up an 81-58 win against Principia College on Tuesday night at Emerson Performance Center. With the win, the Hornets improve to 3-4 on the season while the Panthers fall to 1-3 on the season.
The Panthers would start the game on a 4-0 run before a layup from senior guard
Freddy Reeves Jr. (Minneapolis, Minn./Chardon State University) and a dunk from senior guard
Seth Chargois (Tulsa, Okla./Johnson Community College) would tie the game at four. A 4-2 run by the Panthers would have them leading 8-6. A layup and the free throw from senior guard
Bennie Amos III (New Orleans, La./Delgado Community College), another layup and two more free throws would conclude the 7-0 run by Amos III that saw the Hornets go from down 11-6 to up 13-11. A three from Amos III and a three from senior forward
Keondre Brown (Los Angeles, Calif./Grandview University) would put the Hornets up 19-14. After two free throws from Chargois that would put the Hornets up 21-17 with 9:18 left in the first and would start the Hornets 27-10 run to close out the first half. Over the course of the run, Reeves Jr. would score five straight points and seven points during the run. Chargois would add 11 points during the run, Amos III would add four, senior forward
Jermarco Burse (Annapolis, Mo./Truman State University) would add three and junior forward
Jalen Watson (East St. Louis, Ill./St. Louis Community College would add two and would give the Hornets a 46-27 lead at the half.
Reeves Jr. and Watson would record jumpers early in the second half that had the Hornets up 50-29. A three from Amos III and a dunk by junior forward
Ty Lampley (Belleville, Ill./Rend Lake Community College) would give the Hornets a 55-29 lead with 16:24 left to play. A three from junior guard
Brandon Vigne (New Orleans, La./Delgado Community College) with 13:41 left would push the lead to 31 at 60-29. Vigne would hit another three to push the lead to 65-32 with 12:59 left. Lampley's free throws would give the Hornets a 70-40 lead with 8:46 to play. The Panthers would go on a 14-4 run to cut the Hornets lead to 74-54 with 3:48 left in the game. The Hornets would close on a 7-4 run to win 81-58.
The Hornets would go 30-58 (51.7 percent) from the field, 7-15 (46.7 percent) from three and 14-21 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line. The Hornets would record a season-high 42 rebounds including 36 defensive rebounds, recorded their second best shooting percentage from the field at 51.7 percent. They also held Principia to the lowest field goal percentage against at 29.2 percent from the field and 25.0 percent from three.
Amos III led the way with 23 points and four assists, while Chargois added 18 points and Reeves Jr. added 13 points. Brown led the way with eight rebounds while Lampley recorded seven. Vigne led with four steals and Burse and Chargois each recorded a block.
The Hornets return to action on Thursday, November 21st at 7:30 pm as they open American Midwest Conference play against Williams Baptist University in Walnut Ridge, Ark. The Hornets next home game will be Thursday, December 5th at 7:30 pm against Hannibal-LaGrange University.
