Women's Basketball Comes From Behind to Post 80-78 Win at William Penn

OSKALOOSA, Iowa - Harris-Stowe State University women's basketball comes back from 12 point halftime deficit to win 80-78 at William Penn University in their season opener on Monday night at Penn Gymnasium. With the win, the Lady Hornets improve to 1-0 on the season while the Statesmen fall to 1-1 on the season.

The Lady Hornets and Statesmen would trade baskets before a three from senior guard Lauryn Evans (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) would put the Lady Hornets up 9-7 in the first quarter. Another jumper from Evans would put the Lady Hornets up 11-8 before the Statesmen would close the quarter on a 13-8 run to hold a 20-19 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The Statesmen would start the second quarter on an 6-0 run before a layup from junior guard Cailynn Dilosa (Gary, Ind./Merriville) would cut the lead to 26-21. After two free throws from Dilosa the Statesmen lead would be cut to 38-29 with just over four minutes before the half. A jumper from freshman guard Dyonna Moore (St. Louis, Mo./Vashon) would cut the Statesmen lead to 48-36 going into the half.

A layup from freshman guard Jayla Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) and a three from freshman Alivia Montgomery (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central) would cut the deficit to four at 55-51. Free throw from Dilosa and back-to-back field goals from freshman forward Tyara Davis (Kansas City, Kan./Blue Valley North) would give the Lady Hornets the lead at 57-56 and their first lead since they led 19-18. The Lady Hornets would hold the Statesmen to eight points in the third quarter.

A jumper from senior guard Samara Swire (Tinley Park, lll./Lincoln-Way East) and a layup from Dilosa would put the Lady Hornets up 70-66 with 4:33 left in the game. A 9-4 run by the Statesmen would put them up 75-74. A layup from Davis with 58 seconds left and from Montgomery with 34 seconds would put the Lady Hornets up 80-77 before holding on to win 80-78.

Dilosa would record a team-high 19 points while Evans added 13 points. All 10 players for the Lady Hornets recorded a point. Davis would record a team-high 10 rebounds including seven offensive rebounds. Dilosa would record four steals. Junior forward Marchi Hunter (Menifee, Calif./Vista del Lago) would record a team-high three assists. Senior forwards J'Lessa Jordan (St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood Central) and Toree Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) would both record two blocks.

The Lady Hornets return to action on Thursday, November 7th at 5:30 pm against Brescia University in Owensboro, Ky.
