Men's Basketball Falls to #13 Central Baptist

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University men's basketball falls 97-81 to #13 Central Baptist College on Saturday afternoon at Emerson Performance Center. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 4-9 on the season and 1-4 in American Midwest Conference play while the Mustangs improve to 10-2 and 5-0 in AMC play.

A layup from junior forward Jalen Watson (East St. Louis, Ill./St. Louis Community College) would give the Hornets an early 2-0 lead. After a three from senior guard Bennie Amos III (New Orleans, La./Delgado Community College) the Hornets were back on top 5-3. A jumper from Amos III, two free throws from sophomore guard Justin Coleman (St. Louis, Mo./Delta State University), two free throws from Amos III and a jumper from junior forward Ty Lampley (Belleville, Ill./Rend Lake Community College) the Hornets led 13-5. A 9-2 run by the Mustangs had the Hornets only leading by one. A layup from senior forward Keondre Brown (Los Angeles, Calif./Grandview University) would give the Hornets a 19-17 lead before Amos III would put the Hornets back on top 22-19. A layup from Coleman would give the Hornets a 26-24 lead with just over nine minutes to play in the half. 

A 13-3 run would give the Mustangs a 37-29 lead. A layup from Amos III, two layups from Watson and a layup from senior guard Seth Chargois (Tulsa, Okla./Johnson Community College) would cut the deficit to 39-37. A three from Amos III and a layup from Watson would cut the deficit to 44-42 going into halftime.

A 10-2 run by the Mustangs would push the lead to 54-44 before a three from Lampley cut the Mustangs lead to 54-47. A 14-9 run by the Mustangs left the Hornets trailing 68-56 with just under 14 minutes to play. A layup from Coleman cut the lead to 68-58 Mustangs. Chargois would knock down a three that cut the deficit to eleven with 10:30 to play. After Chargois and Coleman each made a pair of free throws the deficit was 74-65. A jumper from Watson cut the Mustangs lead to 75-67. The Mustangs scored 22 of the final 36 points in the game to take the 97-81 win.

Amos III had a game-high and season-high 34 points including 22 in the first half. Watson added 18 points while Charogis added 10. Chargois had seven rebounds while Amos III and Brown added six rebounds each. Chargois dished out five assists. 

The Hornets went 30-68 (44.1%) from the field, 7-23 (30.4%) from three and 14-15 (93.3%) from the free throw line.

The Hornets return to action on Tuesday, January 7th as they resume AMC play on the road at Missouri Baptist at 7:30 pm.
