LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Harris-Stowe State University men's basketball fell 96-89 at Philander Smith University on Monday night. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 4-6 on the season while the Panthers improve to 8-3 on the season.
Senior guard
Seth Chargois (Tulsa, Okla./Johnson Community College) would get the scoring started with a three on the fastbreak to put the Hornets on top. A 10-0 run by the Panthers would give them a 10-3 lead before a layup from senior guard
Bennie Amos III (New Orleans, La./Delgado Community College) would stop the run. After Amos III would it from three the Panthers lead was trimmed to 10-8. A 7-0 run by the Panthers would extend the lead to 17-8 before junior guard
Justin Edwards (Corona, Calif./Oakwood University) would make a jumper to stop the run. A dunk from junior forward
Jalen Watson (East St. Louis, Ill./St. Louis Community College) and two free throws from junior guard
Brandon Vigne (New Orleans, La./Delgado Community College) would bring the Hornets closer at 19-14.
A made free throw by Amos III, after a technical by the Panthers and a three from senior forward
Keondre Brown (Los Angeles, Calif./Grandview University) cut the Panthers lead to 21-18. Watson would make a jumper to cut the deficit to seven. After Chargois would make two free throws to cut the Panthers lead to 29-22. The Panthers followed with a 5-0 run to push the lead to 34-22. A layup from junior forward
Ty Lampley (Belleville, Ill./Rend Lake Community College), a jumper from Brown and Chargois would cut the deficit to 37-28. Lampley would cut the deficit to five before the Panthers took a seven point lead into the half at 43-36.
Chargois would get the scoring started in the second half with two made free throws to make it a five point game before he would hit a three to make it 46-41 Panthers. A 6-0 run by the Panthers pushed their lead to 52-41 before a jumper from Watson and a three from senior forward
Jermarco Burse (Annapolis, Mo./Truman State University) would cut the Panthers lead to 54-46 with 13:55 to play. A jumper from Brown would cut it to 63-53 in favor of the Panthers. A layup from Edwards cut the Panthers lead to 68-59 before the Panthers went on an 8-0 run to push the lead to 76-59 before Chargois would make two free throws to end the run. After Amos III would make two free throws to cut the Panthers lead to 77-66, the Hornets would score nine of the next 16 points to cut the deficit to 84-75. A 9-5 run by the Panthers would give them a 93-80 lead before closing out the game 96-89.
Amos III would score a season-high and game-high 29 points while Chargois added 25 points. Chargois would lead the team with nine rebounds including five on the offensive glass. Amos III would record a season-high and game-high seven steals. Vigne and Amos III would record three assists each. The Hornets would record a season-high 18 steals. They would go 29-72 (40.3%) from the field, 12-33 (36.4%) from three and a perfect 19-19 at the free throw line.
The Hornets are back in action on Thursday, December 5th at Emerson Performance Center at 7:30 pm as they continue American Midwest Conference play against Hannibal-LaGrange University.
