Baseball Falls in Tough Loss to Williams Baptist

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University baseball fell in the final game of the series to Williams Baptist University at Hornets Field on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets fell in a hard fought game 17-15 to the Eagles. With the loss the Hornets fall to 1-18 on the season and 0-9 in American Midwest Conference play while Williams Baptist improves to 21-9 and 5-4 in the AMC.

The Hornets recorded a season-high 15 runs on a season-high 17 hits in the game against the Eagles. The Eagles would jump out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and add on three more in the second to take a 5-0 into the bottom of the second.

Senior first baseman Hunter Miller (Chesterfield, Mo./Upper Iowa University) would start the second with a single to left center after a throwing error by the pitcher on a pick off attempt Miller would advance to second. Junior outfielder Skywalker Mann (Lee Summit, Mo.) would single to right center as Miller would advance to third. Senior infielder Julian Cintel (St. Louis, Mo.) would single to center to drive in the Hornets first run of the game. 

Junior outfielder Za'Maree Tillman (Bakersfield, Calif.) would keep the rally with an infield single to load the bases. Freshman first baseman Carter Henderson (San Diego, Calif.) would cut the lead to 5-2 in the second with an RBI groundout. After junior outfielder Dwayne Daggs (St. Louis, Mo.) was hit by pitch to load the bases with two outs senior catcher Austin Toler (Highland, Ill./Highland) would come to the plate and deliver a three run double to right center to tie the game at 5-5.

The Eagles would regain the lead with two runs in the third and one more in the fourth to take an 8-5 lead into the bottom of the fourth. Cintel would single to start the fourth and then steal second. With two outs sophomore infielder Cameron Pratt (Anderson, Ind.) would reach on an error to bring in Cintel to cut the lead back to 8-6. 

The Eagles would extend their lead to five after a three run top of the fifth to go on top 11-6. In the bottom of the sixth Cintel would hit a solo home run to right centerfield off of the scoreboard to cut the lead to four. Tillman would single to right and then advance on a wild pitch and would advance to third on an infield single to shortstop by Henderson. Pratt would drive in the eighth run with a sacrifice fly to center.

In the bottom of the seventh Miller would cut the Eagles lead to 11-9 with a home run to straight away center. Mann would then double down the leftfield line. Atfer Cintel would fly out Mann would move to third. Mann would score on a wild pitch to cut it to 11-10. Tillman would then be hit by pitch and advance to third on a single to right center by Henderson. Junior infielder Jack Boland (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Community College) would run for Henderson at first. Pratt would proceed to single off the third baseman's glove to bring in Tillman to tie the game at 11. Daggs would then single to left to score Boland to give the Hornets their first lead of the game at 12-11.

The Eagles would score five runs in the eighth to go up 16-12. Miller would get the rally started with a one out double to right, followed by a hit by pitch that allowed Mann to reach. Cintel would single to left to score Miller on a bang-bang play at the plate to cut the lead to 16-13. Tillman would single to center to cut the lead to 16-14 with a single to center that would score Mann. Cintel would pick up a steal of home to make it 16-15 as the Hornets fell short as the Eagles would take a 17-15 lead to the bottom of the ninth. The Hornets would have a chance and bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but fell just short.

Miller would record three hits including a double and a home run while scoring three runs. Cintel would record four hits including a home run and three single while also scoring four times, driving in three runs, and having two stolen bases. Henderson recorded two hits and an RBI. Pratt would record two runs batted in and Toler would record three RBI's. Sophomore pitcher Anderson Dotolo (Tulsa, Okla.) would give up just one run in two innings of relief on the mound.

The Hornets are back in action on Tuesday, April 2nd at Westminster College in Fulton, Mo. for one game with first pitch at 2 pm.
