ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University women's volleyball picked up a 3-0 (25-7,25-18,25-14) win against Rust College on Tuesday night at the Emerson Performance Center. With the win the Lady Hornets improve to 4-10 on the season.
In the first set, the Lady Hornets raced out to a 9-0 lead on the strength of strong serving from sophomore outside hitter
Kyla McReynolds (O'Fallon, Ill./Althoff Catholic) as she pushed the lead to 8-0 with seven consecutive serves. McReynolds run would continue for one point after the Bearcats would call a timeout down 8-0. After the timeout, McReynolds would record an ace to make it 9-0 before the Bearcats would score. After the 9-1 lead the Lady Hornets would go on a 4-2 run to go ahead 13-3. The Lady Hornets would close set one on a 12-4 run.Â
In the second set, the Lady Hornets jumped ahead 19-7. Rust would go on a 9-2 run to close the gap to 21-16. Senior middle hitter
Jayden Sortor (Sherman, Ill./Parkland College) would record a kill and back-to-back aces to put the Lady Hornets up 24-16 before the Lady Hornets would close the set 25-18.
The Lady Hornets would start set three with an 11-2 lead. After a Rust timeout, the Bearcats would go on a 4-0 run to close the gap to 11-6 and he run would extend to 7-2 and cut the lead to 13-9 in favor of the Lady Hornets. The Lady Hornets would then rattle off a 7-0 run to go up 20-9. The final 10 points of the match were split at five a piece with the Lady Hornets closing out the set and sweep at 25-14.
The Lady Hornets would hold Rust to -.040 hitting percentage in the match. Sophomore setter
Isa Smith (Little Rock, Ark./Joe T. Robinson) would record 15 assists and five aces while freshman setter
Jayla Payne (San Antonio, Texas/Wagner) would record 11 assists. Sortor would record seven kills and six aces. McReynolds would add four aces. In both matches against Rust the Lady Hornets have recorded 18 aces. Sophomore defensive specialist
Dejah Foster (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) would record a game-high 21 digs.
The Lady Hornets are back in action on Saturday, September 21st against Governors University at Emerson Performance Center. Game time is to be determined.
