Women's Basketball Falls to Cottey

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University women's basketball fell 74-60 to Cottey College on Saturday afternoon at Emerson Performance Center. With the loss, the Lady Hornets fall to 2-11 on the season and 1-7 in American Midwest Conference play while the Comets improve to 9-4 on the season and 5-2 in AMC play.

The Comets and Lady Hornets would trade baskets to start the game. Senior guard Lauryn Evans (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) would give the Lady Hornets a 3-2 lead and would tie the game at six with her second three of the game. Junior guard Cailynn Dilosa (Gary, Ind./Merriville) would give the Lady Hornets an 8-6 lead with a layup. A jumper from freshman guard Alivia Montgomery (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central) would connect on a jumper to put the Lady Hornets on top 10-9 with 5:25 left in the first quarter. Back-to-back jumpers from Montgomery saw the Lady Hornets lead get pushed to 14-13 before a layup from Dilosa would push it to three. An 8-2 run by the Comets would give them a 21-18 lead after one.

The Comets would score the first eight points in the second quarter to extend their lead to 29-18 before Evans knocked down two free throws to cut the deficit to 29-20. A three from Evans would cut the deficit to 30-23 before the Comets closed on a 5-0 run to take a 35-23 lead into halftime.

Dilosa would make two free throws to start the third quarter and cut the deficit to 10. A jumper from senior forward Toree Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) would cut the Comets lead to 39-28. The Comets would go on a 10-3 run to extend the lead to 49-31 before a three from Dilosa, a layup from senior forward J'Lessa Jordan (St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood Central) and a jumper from Evans cut the deficit to 52-38. The Comets would take a 54-40 lead into the fourth quarter.

A jumper and a three from Dilosa cut the deficit to 56-45 early in the fourth quarter. The Comets would go on an 8-0 run that Montgomery would end with a jumper to cut the Comets lead to 64-47. The Lady Hornets would score 13 of the last 24 points before falling 74-60 to the Comets.

Dilosa would have a game-high 24 points while Evans added 13 and Montgomery added 10. Jordan and Jackson would each record 10 rebounds in the game. Montgomery would record a career-high nine assists in the game. Dilosa would add three steals. Jordan, Jackson and junior forward Marchi Hunter (Menifee, Calif./Vista del Lago) would all record two blocks in the game.

The Lady Hornets went 23-57 (40.4%) from the field, 6-15 (40.0%) from three and 8-12 (66.7%) at the free throw line.

The Lady Hornets return to action on Tuesday, January 14th in the rescheduled game from January 7th against Missouri Baptist. The game against Missouri Baptist will be played at Missouri Baptist at 5:30 pm.
